Default What song(s) are you working on?

I'm working on Steve Howe's "Mood For A Day" something I haven't played in over 30 years. I used to play it flatpick-hybrid style, so getting that one fast run at speed near the beginning is the whole song for me. Next on the hit parade is his song "The Clap." I'm not going to attempt that fingerstyle for sure. I'll either just use a flatpick or try it with a thumbpick.

Both are great tunes. Mood for a Day is a must for a concert classical or flamenco guitar. Steve Howe was never really happy with the second one being called The Clap, its actual name is just Clap. Why ? Here in the UK "The Clap" is a vernacular expression for venereal disease...

That said, Clap is a great tune too. I haven't played it for years but when I did I did it fingerstyle. I remember that great descending end run was a real finger buster for the right hand.

Best of luck,

Ian

Actually, I'm working on my own songs. Most of the time, I have recorded them with friends who played other instruments for me like keyboards or bass. In the absence of those friends being here all the time, I'm trying to develop admirable ways to perform them with only a solo guitar and my voice.

Cool

I've been working on a Dylan song that started "haunting me" last summer, when I heard a street musician playing it..."Lay Down Your Weary Tune"...it's a challenge for me, because I keep hearing the Byrds singing it as I play, and I can't sing all the harmonies, so I keep jumping from one to another part!!! It's actually a hymn, in a way...

I'm thinking I need to find a key for it to fit my voice...

Well since you ask.

Camel Toe Bob & Tom's bawdy version of the Beach Boys Kokomo. I have the words and chords if anybody wants them.

FUN FUN FUN The real Beach Boys version. It's fun, fun, fun to play it on the 12 string too.

Lake Shore Drive The one hit wonder by Alliota, Haynes and Jeramiah. It's a great 12 string song.

Loney Country Song by DC Lugi. Hey any song that starts out...
My turtle got crushed by a Greyhound buss and my horse lost another leg! Can't be all bad.

City of New Orleans Steve Goodman's classic railroad song.

Canadian Railroad Trilogy Gordon Lightfoot This one is stetching some of my ability; but I am determined to learn it and play it for my friend who is building his own 1/4 scale railroad. http://www.arborwayrailroad.com/ I want to ride the train throught the rolling hills singing the song!

California Dreamin' the Mama's & Papp's classic

John Mayer's "Belief". I first heard it on his "Continuum" album and I thought wow what a great tune, I wonder what it would sound like "unplugged". Well then I heard the acoustic version on his "The Village Sessions" and yup... I just had to figure it out. I'm also playing around with Clapton's "Key to the Highway" and Jimi's "the Wind Crys Mary".

Here's what I've got on the go...

Icarus - Martin Simpson

The Shearings Not For You / Bogies Bonnie Bell - Trad (arr Martin Simpson)

Blackbird - The Beatles

Pachelbels Cannon in D Minor - Johann Pachelbel (Yes I know, it's a bit random!)

California Dreamin' - Mammas and the Pappas (The missus likes this one)

mdun, what chords do you have for California Dreamin'? I've found several different transcriptions so far and I can't decide which one to use!

Jon,

Why not book yourself on Martin Simpson's May workshop this year ? There are still some places left and I'm sure you would get a hell of a lot out of it. I'm booked again this year and will be up in Sheffield in May.

I'm currently working on an arrangement of Temperance Reel and writing some variations to try and come up with a decent performance piece.

My two favorite guitarist of the moment. You have to watch these guys play if you aren't familiar with their work. Simply amazing.

I have a nasty feeling that I'd be hopelessly outclassed Ian! The trouble is I don't really know many other musicians so I don't really know where I am on the ladder as it were. My chord changes if I'm strumming can be a bit pants but I don't think I'm too bad at fingerpicking but I'm not what I would call accomplished!
