Default New addition to the family - NDD

I never seem to find the dogs I end up with. They seem to find me. My neighbor had this little cutie and was unable to take care of her. She's very shy, but I don't think she's ever had a stable home. Once she gets to know you, she is very loving and affectionate. So meet Cocobolo, or Coco as we call her.

Here she is looking a bit more stately.

She’s a beauty. I’ve read that when a dog sits like that, with their paw tucked in like that, it signals they are very comfortable. Best of luck to all of you.

She is a beauty, congratulations.

I'm going a bit off topic here, and I hope I haven't told this story too many times here before

I had one find me like that once. Out on a hike with my dog, and this one followed us for miles and then jumped in the car when we finished. She was emaciated, teeth falling out, fur matted, etc. She had been in woods for a while by the looks of her.

But she had a tag, so I called the dog warden, who contacted the owners. They claimed to have taken her to a shelter, which the warden said was a lie as the first thing a shelter will do is remove the tags. I found her in a state forest about 15 miles from the owner's house, so I'm guessing they just dumped her there.

So what else could we do but get her fixed up? A neighbor tried to adopt her, but claimed she sat by the window and cried staring at our house all day. So back she came.

In many ways she was the best dog we ever had. My kids were toddlers at the time, and she let them try to ride her like a horse!

Kudos on doing the right thing, and enjoy your new friend.

Thanks guys. We'll get here broken in and opened up. Just a few string changes and she'll be good to go. There is potential there, we both see it.

When I was a kid and we lost a dog through age, sickness, or trauma and had had some time to grieve, my mom would travel down to the local pet shelter and pick us a new family member. We always had the best dogs for family pets, regardless of their history of abuse or abandonment or whatever, and later in life when I asked her how she managed to choose such great dogs, she told me that she used to get down in front of each cage and look deeply into the dog's eyes, and the one with the saddest and sweetest eyes would be the one.

That dog right there - young Coco - has very sweet eyes. I believe you've got yourselves a good one.

Congrats and enjoy - they are truly a blessing.
