With a Movingai' guitar, can you sing "Sexual Healing"?

Beautiful guitar!

Default Ft-16-d-wrx

The Flamenco got its first coat of varnish this morning, and will emerge from its chrysalis in about three weeks, transformed from apparently dead trees to a living musical instrument. . . with only a little luck.

So I am on to the next Big Thing. Encouraged as I am from finally selling one of my dreads to a working (successful/respected/tasteful/etc) Bluegrass musician in my local scene, I am going to make my next in a series of Bluegrass specific Dreadnoughts. I think this is the eighth, the detail oriented forensic specialists among us can mine thelist for the truth, but I am just going to build it. I have chosen a top from Tom Thiel (Northwind Tonewoods) that I picked up in 2009, and I am matching it to a back and side set of Mahogany I got from Maro Buenrostro about the same time. This Mahogany is VERY deep in color and seems really beautiful to me, though quite plain compared to the fancier cuts, perhaps. It is honest and should reflect the character in the top very well. Pictures soon enough.

I think I may have heard this guitar/player at Walker Creek, at a late night jam playing with Jeff Scroggins and his band.

It was a Sexauer Dreadnought, it looked new, and sounded amazing. This was about 3 weeks ago.

Can't wait to see the next one!

It has been pointed out to me that this is actually an FT-15.625-D, but I will continue to round my numbers off for the present.

Here are some pictures of the wood I have chosen.

The next two have been light balanced to make out the wood more easily:

That's the one. Mike Wilhoyte is a very capable picker and an all around nice guy.

The woods for this one look amazing, Bruce--looking forward to following the progress on this one!

This Dread is the kind of thing I'd like to be sharing over in the UMGF, but for at least two days I have been unable to raise the place. Is it just me?

This is as close to a D18 clone as I will have made up till now, I believe. All others used fancier wood and I could not seem to stop myself from inauthentic embellishment. We'll see how my self control goes this time.

I've got the rosette in the top and the center strip in the back.

Same problem here - just sits and never loads.

Bruce, how do you go about determining X angle? Do you just shoot for a 90ish angle, or placement of the X under the bridge, or does it vary based on what characteristics you might be shooting for?

One of those very basic things, but I find it interesting how other builders go about it.

Where the braces cross the bridge is what I consider most important as far as sound is concerned. My other major consideration is the relationship between the upper transverse brace and the X members relative to the sound hole, but this is a matter of long term stability. I definitely want the guitar to outlive me. This X is 92 degrees. My goal is to end up with a guitar that sounds like a Martin D, but more so: not different, just way above average. I am going for pre-war sensitivity with a little more focus. We'll see what really happens in a month or so.
