Looking good, Phil! I love the color of the Tree. It's just a beautiful wood.

Kindly,
Danny

I had thought of barley...so, not too far...it's a good rotation crop for wheat (along with peas)...

Looks great Phil. I can't wait to see what the cedar on the inside does for the tonal qualities. I am pretty excited to see how this one turns out.

Thanks folks.. The cedar won't contribute much of anything according to Tim - tonally anyway. The sides are quite rigid and although there is some "reflection" (like a concrete wall I'd say!) it should have much less of a contribution than the active surfaces.

What it does is add a great scent to the guitar (we can have four of the five senses covered!) and it's a very light option to the alternatives for side woods.

Let's see if Photobucket and the AGF are cooperating today:

(yeah! no error report today...)
Tim marking the joined back

And making the cut

Leaving enough surplus... (cool shot - you can see the guitar shape in reverse)

For a nice bookmatch for the back plate of the headstock! (The front overlay will be ebony with some wood inlay...)

Glad you are even using the "offcuts" of that beautiful mahogany Phil; it would be a crime to waste it!

...I have a hard time throwing away Tree scraps that are too small for a truss rod cover...

Spanish Cedar is a great choice for the sides one of my favorites!

Hey Phil and Tim,
Great looking set of woods for this build.

I was wondering:
What's the density of 'The Tree' wood in comparison to a good old set of Honduran mahogany or to Sapelle?
What are the body dimensions for the SDG?

Hey Chuck! I don't know, and since this is the first or second set of 'tree' that Tim has had, I suspect that Harv or Jay may have more specific and comparison info.

I'm just happy to play it - and that it sounds great and looks superb.

Phil

I don't have any specific density measurements but IME The Tree wood is maybe a "tad" slightly more dense than [average] run of the mill Honduran Mahogany. However, H. Mahogany is all over the place in terms of density so that's not really a fair comparison.

Soli Deo Gloria SDG
Upper Bout - 11"
Waist - 9.5"
Lower Bout - 15.5"
Body length - 19.5"
Depth at end - varies

Beautiful work so far! I'm also a big fan of mahogany, and need to wonder... If "the tree mahogany" is all from one tree, then approximately how much of that wood is still available for guitars? I am no where near financially ready to have a guitar commissioned, but just on the off-chance that I was in say 10 or so years... what are the odds that a chunk of that wood would still be available? Sorry I tend to be a dreamer on these forums.

Default McKnight build for Healdsburg delivery - 'tree' mahogany & adi

Here ya go mike
http://www.guitarbench.com/2009/10/0...ature-article/

Yes it's one tree.
And there is not a whole lot left. Harv leach and jay collect as much as they can but it's getting herder to find.

I have a dream... (not shared with Jay...)...

In 1980 I was a flight instructor in northern Vermont. One mountain we flew over (New Hampshire, I think) had one of the old "DEW line" (distant early warning) sites - US Dept of Defense long range radar facility.

When the facility was abandoned and the property was sold, the story goes, (I heard it from one who should have known) the guy who bought it pulled the miles of copper piping and selling that for scrap, made enough to pay off the whole property.

I think I'll "lie in wait" and when Skywalker Ranch goes up for sale, I'll buy it, and pull the 'tree' paneling and sell it to luthiers one set at a time and pay off the property!

(evil chuckle, rubbing hands together...)

Phil
