Yes, the sound of a guitar is what the builder makes it. In my experience they all sound different but builders do what they do. They are not flexible to make a guitar sound this way or that. There may be some that can but ive had lots of guitars built and they all sound like the builders guitars so play the builders guitars before you commission.
Having said that, each piece of wood will sound different even if it is the same species. There is an average or typical sound to a species but there is also a range. So the builder can tweak the sound with different woods but it will sound like him.
ive used that site, its good

Thanks for the reference. I used to get thousands of hits a day but in more recent times that has sagged. There is a ton of information out there and for an acoustic guitarist, I think this site gets more of it in one place than anywhere else. It is 100% non-commercial.

I really liked that site because you can read up on tons of different tonewoods that you would never know could be used for guitar.

Of course, as I have matured in my guitar geekdom, I have come to realize some of the follies of geeking out too much over tonewoods, but it is fun to read and fantasize. I love that there are so many different tonewoods out there so you can basically get the big 3 sounds (Rosewood, Mahogany, and Maple) using any combination of weird tonewoods that you may not have heard of before.

Thanks for this compilation, Universe. Hadn't seen it before.

It'll be fun to take the time to read, and find out whether the gurus contradict one another.

Thanks for that link, Universe. Some good reading!

Not reading, but still interesting in relation to tonewoods...have you watched the videos by acclaimed UK luthier Tom Sands? As an example, here is one on cocobolo.

Default Great perspective on the Woods..Purple Heart!!!???

I tend to be scientific. I need something to help me along & comparing the numbers gives a general range of what to expect. Helps in pairing sound wood.

If you go factory wood you are going to get a certain profile from the maker.
If you want custom & discuss your sound wants from a special builder than you can tune into something that will be magical.

Reading about the bracing & the tone box & how it all comes together
is science, feel & experience.

Someone out their think Breedlove is trying to use instruments to tune into the guitar.

Anyway, I'm glad so many enjoyed it. There is so much there that it will take time.

You can really see the scoop in the mids in Brazilian. Only thing is that there are many less dense woods that have a similar profile but are not going to sound like BRW.

The wood I really want to know about is Purple Heart.
Looks at that sound profile & its a hard dense wood & the color...now this sounds like magic...

Thanks

My compliments to you Roland! I have printed it out and put it in a binder where it resides next to Charles Tauber’s “Guitar Setup 101.”

Even though the majority of your tome was written over fifteen years ago, it is very fresh and relevant. I really liked what John Greven had to say about Martins and their ‘magic’. And very telling was how he talked about his own guitars… they all sounded like guitars!

Greven also touched upon weighted sides and their affect on tone. This is something that Giuliano Nicoletti (Iulius Guitars) has done a lot of work with.

Many thanks again!
