With plug!
I think I'm going to try to work with Steve and see if there's a way to have a sound port with the plug they can go in it when you don't want to use the sound port.

My last two guitars were built with a sound port. For me they are a must have. I play almost entirely for my own enjoyment so how they sound to the player is the most important thing. They are also a huge benefit if you have high frequency hearing loss.

Thanks guys, yes, I also play mostly for myself, so that is a really good point. I have been talking with Steve about the design of the sound port so I think we will work something out.

Side set
I have been so enamored by the back set, that I realized lately that I had never seen the side set for the back. A quick email to Steve and voila here they are! AND looking pretty awesome if I do say so myself!!!
I have asked Steve if we can be sure to incorporate the lighter sapwood sections into the design for sure!!!! So much character and the grain just above it is amazing to me at least!! Thanks for looking. Tom |

Beautiful sides for sure, Tom! So I'm seeing an upside down owl just above the sapwood and the amazing grain...or possibly a bat with his wings spreading out! Congrats again on your beautiful wood set...

Ha too funny, I saw that exact thing, in fact, I think it is a snowy owl to be exact, but I did not want to say it for fear of being pegged strange, but probably too late for that...haha. Yes, I think the sides are every bit as pretty if not more so than the back... Thanks, Tom |

For the sake of accuracy, Steve has told me that the lighter section of the side set is not sapwood, but a lighter/orange colored area of heart wood. We also both like the idea of it coming together at the butt end.

I have seen some ports with a slide that will close it off. I think you should talk to Steve about it and then maybe my nagging ideas won't seem so bad to him...

Another step along the way and another decision finalized. This is a
picture of the 5 piece laminated neck (more I guess if you count the black laminate lines, 7). Steve ended up finding a nice dark piece of koa to use as the center section instead of rosewood. This should tie the neck in with the bindings and look great. Here is a picture of the assembled pieces, clamped to allow it to be viewed, but not glued up yet. Thanks, Tom |

Looking good, Tom.
The assembled pieces bring to mind an enticing wood sandwich.

Hmmmmm....I guess the mahogany would be the bread, the maple the butter on both slices, and the Koa, I guess, would have to be spam as Hawaii is the number one consumer of spam in the country....little known fact. Tom |

And Voila, here they are all glued and clamped for the weekend!!! |

Work continues
Now that some of these builders have got that pesky Memphis work nearing completion, the work on the custom orders continue .
Here is Ryan toiling away at thinning the sides (OK, maybe not toiling, but definitely working).... |
