Suite: Judy Blue Eyes
Hello all I'm feeling much better and now I want to learn one of the "Holy Grail" songs of acoustic rock. (It is to me anyways) There are many alternate tunings that people suggest. Does any one have any experience with this song I'd love to know. I'll be learning on my HD28-V. I will say this is by far the forum I've ever been a part of. If you're reading this and know what I speak of thank you again. Also thanks in advance for any advice on the tune!
Best regards, FP

James james does a pretty good lesson on this song on you tube.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zPKrsoLZDjw Jerry’s guitar bar does it as well and his is good too. There are differing opinions on the tuning but i am pretty sure james has got it nailed. All D except for the B string which is tuned to A |

James James is great......(privatetricker)....I really enjoy his videos. I started doing the song last night and I'm tuning my guitar to all E's except the B string which stays B. I'm sure there's many ways to do it.

They we're very entertaining and had great sound and arrangements. Their website says the "The Foxes have flown the coop", meaning the two young women singers grew up and went in another direction, as happens. They were great to listen to. |

I am learning this right now. I have the left channel guitar part pretty much down. My band mate will play the right channel part up till about 4 minutes in, then we switch. He is playing electric and I play acoustic so I felt it would sound better if he plays the lead part and I play the drone chords.
To avoid having to retune the guitar to an E chord as the original, I use a partial capo on the second fret; put the capo on backwards and moved off of the low E, leaving the low E open. It sounds like dropped D tuning. Then play it in D.

I learned Suite Judy Blue Eyes back in the 60s from a photographer friend who learned it from Steven Stills. He played it in D modal tuning. That's DADDAD. When you tune down there's less stress on the the neck compared with tuning up but you can also tune to EBEEBE if you want to play in the key of E. Or use a capo.
Keep in mind there are many guitar parts on the original recording CSN recording. You're hearing a mix of all of them. It would take about 6 guitarists to recreate that sound live. By the way, D modal is also the tuning that Steven Stills used for the song 4 & 20. Last edited by Al Acuff; 05-27-2019 at 12:16 PM. |
