I did catch it. Interesting flick. Man, BW really had a tough row to hoe. And what a slimeball manager/therapist he had (played by paul giamatti)

I enjoyed the movie's portrayal of the dad, Murry. When I got out of the army, I was introduced to Murry Wilson. He wanted me to help him write some songs… I didn't know what had happened with his relationship to the Beach Boys, and was quite flattered….

Murry was a lounge type piano man, and had lots of lounge style melodies. He wanted lyrics like in Frank Sinatra, or Tony Bennett songs. I was a 22 year old hippie in transition. It was a campaign that failed…..

Sounds as if you lucked out. Murray seems to have been a scary guy.

Paul--I haven't read the details on how the "therapist/manager" became Wilson's legal guardian. That's frightening. The movie doesn't cover how he gets Wilson out of his room--I thought one of the film's strengths was that it implied more than it revealed.

Giammatti is a fine actor--he's developed quite a range. First saw him in Sideways.

My favorite part of the movie, other than Elizabeth Banks, was when Wilson went to the Moody Blues concert. He was a big fan of the veteran cosmic rockers.

I watched it last night. They did a good job of telling Brian's story. Highly recommended.

Being an avid BB Fan, I loved the insight into Brian Wilson's obsessive compulsive behavior with his music. His persona reads like a textbook copy of "tortured genius".
I loved the part where he was telling the other guys how they needed to do more to compete with the Beatles. You have to remember the times and how young these guys were.
I already had read about Brian's father and the loser Manager/therapist.
Typical examples of people trying to "run" a talented person's life and causing him to withdraw into drugs and solitude to ease the pain. Same story, been told over and over and still going on.

Not addressed in the movie, but if I remember right he was brought in when Brian was 300 lbs. and living in bed. I think it just progressed from there, with his family not having any luck with him and finally finding someone who they thought was helping him.

I remember that Sir Paul felt he and Wilson were in competition. Both were bass players, singers, composers. Back in the USSR certainly nods respectfully in the BB's direction. McCartney thought Pet Sounds was brilliant. He also wanted to out do it.

I bought Pet Sounds when it was released (in 1966??) and I recall not all of my friends appreciated the album at the time. Everyone was Beatle crazy. It has stood the test of time & I still play it.
