Yeah, Kathy is the first person who spring to mind when I saw this thread. I still remember her cover of "A Case of You" from one of the RMMGA CDs.

Seconded.

Lance McCollum was a fabulous player. He also appeared on one of the rmmga compilations.

Add Kenny Hill to the list. He is an excellent classical guitar builder and player.

Default Luthiers Playing

Here's two in the same band - Vinnie Fodera (Fodera Guitars) on lead guitar, his shop partner Joey Lauricella on bass, both playing one-of-a-kind custom builds:

It's pretty cool to know one of the tippity-top luthiers is a great player.

Richie Dotson in Richmond, VA. Took my guitar to him first time recently, not only a premier luthier having work shipped to him from pros all over, but a genuine, nice guy and helluva player. He played my guitar like I probably never will.

Dale Fairbanks is a hell of a player. Same with Laurent Brondel. Jason Kostal is a great player, but I think he mostly gave it up.

I think Bob Taylor is another exception. I've read a couple of interviews where he said that he doesn't know how to play and started building guitars because he liked the way they looked.

My luthier, Ron Kayfield was a professional guitarist. He played in the band Waysted, toured with Ozzy and the like. He's a great luthier and a blast to talk to, has tons of great stories from his touring days.

Tony Klassen (ARK New Era) is a great player, too.

I stand corrected! Even worse, in one of those videos he talks about getting his first guitar in Jr. High.

But I'm sure I read that he didn't play. It was such an odd statement that I remembered it and confirmed it a separate, later article. These were 1990s local-boy-makes-good stories in the San Diego papers.
