I played the Alvarez locally, and while a nice guitar it was not better than a Yamaha FG820 at half the price.

Sounds to me you might like the Martin D15E. Dread with nice bass. Its cheaper because it’s made in Mexico, but sounds identical to its counterpart. You should be able to get it for a discount by asking as well.
