We had a few gigs this weekend, and I remarked to my partner that my guitar finally sounded "like a guitar." |

This. It's mic placement. When you train, do it with YOUR PA/SPEAKERS. Start with standard mic placements. Listen through YOUR PA. Then experiment. The mic placements I wound up using were very, very unusual. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

So maybe a reasonable approach for me with the ToneDexter would be to go for a good recorded sound, and let the person at the board deal with EQ? . |

You might consider taking your mic and making a couple quick trainings while you're using someone else's PA.

I was talking to Andy about ways to bring the entire sound system into the equation, but it's not really clear how that would work in practice.

To me the room you're in always presents the biggest challenge. Every system I've used over the years usually sounds quite good through near field studio monitors in that particular environment. On the flip side, in a live situation things that have worked great in the studio have proven useless for live and no amount of EQ'ing ever fixes it.

What I'd wish for, in an ideal world, would be for someone sitting out in a room to hear my guitar the way it comes out of studio monitors via a good mic in a studio. But that would seem to require not just fixing the pickup, but incorporating the entire chain, PA, room, etc in the training process, and negating effects of the room (which is likely impossible, since you can't really remove room reverberation).

If you start with WaveMaps that sound well balanced on a good pair of phones, then it should be relatively easy, with simply EQ, to adjust for the PA system + room response on a gig by gig basis.

We run our own sound about 50% of the time. I've got a spate of gigs this week where we're using house sound, so I'll be able to ask the sound guys how much fiddling with my signal they had to do. I've now played a pretty good run of jobs using the TD, and I'm very, very happy with it. It's taken 10lbs off my pedalboard and has a much smaller footprint in the tetris game of loading up the truck/car for gigs. My only complaint is that now I have to bend down to turn the knob to change wavemaps. A footswitch would make it much easier to use, as I sometimes change instruments during a song. |

Phase cancellation is a factor which I never considered when using headphones to monitor myself while recording. Thank you for the very useful information, Audio Sprockets. Last edited by guitaniac; 05-31-2017 at 05:50 PM. |

OK, so you're just cycling thru different wave maps that you created at home, and playing with EQing the PA, right?
