Default Settling of Strings

Try d'Addario Dynacore strings. Your settling-in period will go WAY down. After making the change I can play an entire piece--reasonably in tune--within hours. by the end of the day only small adjustments are necessary. I sometimes change strings on the same day as a performance now. For me, the improvement was dramatic.

I put a set of D'Addario "titanium trebles" with dynacore basses on my guitar recently (after I first commented on this thread), and I agree. The settle-in time is very short.

I also really like the tone of this set. The last time I used the titanium trebles I hated the G string. I almost didn't want to try them again, but I had another set and didn't want to waste it. This time the G is very nice, but the low E sounds dull after a couple weeks (sounded great when new). Overall, a good set of strings for cheap and with a very fast settle-in time.

The intonation on this particular set isn't perfect, though. I don't pre-stretch my strings, so that isn't the issue. Usually I get virtually perfect intonation with D'Addario strings, but this set is a little off on a couple strings.

Cool How long does it take?

Thanks for the tip. I ordered a few sets of D'Addario Dynacore TTs yesterday...even though I doubt they will beat the sound I get with the Thomastik-Infeld CF127 strings, but I'm constantly experimenting and every so often, I strike GOLD!!! The price was right!

I changed classical string for the first time in my life today and they are indeed
in need of an extended setting in period. I only changed to try a hard tension set. The old set sounded fine to me. I tuned 1/2 step up and will let them sit overnight.

----After sitting overnight tuned up 1/2 step they are a long way down the road to stability!

Default string settle

The single most effective thing I have found to reduce string settling-in is to reduce the amount of string length wrapped at the tuning machines and bridge.

If you pull the strings through the pegs with just a slight slackness and wind them up to pitch, you will end up with about 1 1/2 to 3 wraps.

I use either a no twist loop or a one twist loop tie--both with a pinching lock at the rear of the bridge...at both ends, go for secure but with as little tie length as possible.

Try it.

Default pinch

Pinch lock: my hasty description of a string crossing under the loop behind the bridge. I didn't know what to call it

Default Slippage

I stretch as I install. Still...it just takes some time. 3-4 days.

Yup, that's it, and much nicer than I do it (tucked tails on trebles).
