Default Intonation

How can the intonation get so far off? My Gibson The Paul was drastically off.

New or used? If new, it is a Gibson factory oversight. If used, perhaps the original owner was tone deaf? Guitar intonation does drift with changes in neck relief, etc, but should not drift too far too quickly? Periodic checks and tweaks are always necessary.

Change anything recently? The correct saddle position depends on several things such as action, relief, string gauge, and the player's touch on the fretboard. I've gotten a weird string in a new set that didn't want to intonate properly before, too.

Edit: just went back and read your other thread. You said you were going to change strings on it, and maybe the tailpiece too. Any chance the height adjustment nuts under the bridge got bumped, and is there any slop between the bridge and the posts? I've also found that if the bridge is removed or falls off during a string change, it fits on the posts both ways just fine.

How far off do you consider "drastic"? How many cents is the 12th fret off of the 12th fret harmonic?

The Gibson has been in the closet for years and I resurrected her. Guess the intonation has been way off for years, was never properly setup. Every string was a semitone flat, she sings now.

The bridge most likely fell and was put on backwards the last time I changed the strings. That would explain why she was so far off, nice insight. She sings nice now and has a new set of chrome strap buttons.

Yeah, there's a reason I know about that. I'll leave it at that.

Humidity and temperature variations change the neck curve. You might want to check that as well.
