I'm looking forward to playing your new ones. Hopefully at the bash I'll have to dig out the photos of the Bown 12-fret 000 42 style in koa I used to own. Another great guitar by Ralph. |

I am loving this thread. Bown guitars almost never appear for sale in the US. While I should not think of acquiring more guitars, I have thought about a Bown for years. I imagine Ralph won’t be building for too much longer.

Jonny, thanks for bringing that baritone to my attention. It is tempting, though a 16 inch lower bout doesn’t work for my shoulder. What makes it particularly tempting is the ridiculously rare Jaguar’s Ear (Zollernia falcata) back and sides - quartersawn too, which is amazing for that small a tree. I happen to own a guitar with Pau Santo (Zollernia paraensis) back and sides which for all I know is the only one in the US. Someone should snap that baritone up.

For those not that familiar with Bown guitars, here's Clive Carroll remembering John Renbourn in a video made for Guitarist Magazine (the guitars are by Ralph and Clive talks specifically about John Renbourn's Bown at 2'16"):

Interesting that Ralph goes with reverse kerfing. Others such as Dale Fairbanks seem to swear by it. Have you ever asked him what he feels the benfits are?

Not that I'm in the market any more, but how does one get in touch with Mr. Brown?

I have a pair of beautiful steel-string guitars--sort of like classical guitars but with 14-fret joins--made by the German luthier Alexander Voss, another up-and-coming European maker. These guitars were also built with the Spanish-neck construction method. I find in general that these two guitars seem a bit more "transparent" than my other American-made guitars. They are lovely, rich, effortless instruments, for sure. As for Collings Guitars, I don't share the general impression here that they are "lesser" instruments. I have or have had guitars from individual luthiers, as well as from Collings, Martin, and Bourgeois. My Collings guitars are as good as or better than just about any instruments I have ever played. Perhaps the sound profile just fits my ears--a bit of the modern and a bit of the vintage combined. There are certainly lots of wonderful guitars being made today, by a variety of makers large and small. I think it definitely is the second so-called Golden Age of acoustic steel string guitar construction. I feel blessed to be able to live during this time and to have the chance and means to have quite a few great instruments to play.
