If you don't mind, I'd like to clarify the licensing costs for REAPER.

The demo is free. It is licensed as a demo for 30 days. It is completely functional and uncrippled, you can record and save your work without added noise or limited plugins or limited length or any other restriction. After 30 days the startup screen adds a delay and a reminder that the program is unlicensed and should be purchased, but otherwise continues to function without restrictions.

The discounted license is currently priced at $60. You may use the discounted license if any of the following is true:
  • You are an individual, using REAPER only for personal use.
  • You are an individual or business, using REAPER for commercial use, and the yearly gross revenue does not exceed USD $20,000.
  • You are an educational or non-profit organization.

The full commercial license costs $225.

As you can see, most of us qualify for the discounted license. The only problem I see with the licensing is that the cost is so low people underestimate the program. Can REAPER really compete in functionality with programs that cost $600 and up and up?? Surprisingly it appears that it can not only compete, but is winning over users every day from programs like Protools and Cubase.

True that! I was looking at a recent issue of Sound on Sound magazine, and among the writers is one guy who uses REAPER; the only other DAWs I saw them use were Cubase and ProTools, and REAPER was up there with them. I really grew comfortable with it throughout the course of recording the album.
