Further to Shades D-45 post, how about the same question in an OM/000?
Read the D-45 thread with interest. I've been dabbling around on picking up an OM-42 or 000-42. Have a 000-28EC that somedays I love and other days sounds just ok. Other two guitars are mahogany. Thinking I'd like to "upgrade" a rosewood and have looked at the two options mentioned. Bling is ok with me but do wonder if it might become obnoxious in time. Not hung up on a Martin, looking more for just a stunning tone and much prefer well less than $4k. Not really a dread guy with old shoulders, etc. Thoughts for me?
Thanks! |

If you are playing plugged in the Taylor 700 series ltd koa guitar is worth checking out. The redesigned electronics are very good. There was a video of this taylor guitar on youtube. Very nice.

I fancy a D-42 or an 000-42, and I also like to believe that 40 Series instruments are made using higher graded wood and by Martin's senior staff.
The 40 series bling elements that I'm not wild about are the big hex block inlays & the large logo on the standard 42. So I'd go for snowflake inlays and a torch inlaid headstock on a custom 42 model, to me that's more classic Martin. I don't relish buying wooden acoustic guitars at this level sight unseen, so I will either find IT, or IT will find me

All I can really add is that there is something magical about an Adirondack top, rosewood back and sides, and GE bracing on a 000-28. Love mine, and the recorded sound is MUCH bigger sounding than you'd think.

Picked one up about a month ago and I’m really liking it. I don’t have much experience with other guitars of that size, though, honestly. Always been more of a dread player. But it’s got more bass than I anticipated, in a good way.

I am not hung up on bling. I'd check out a Martin 41, 42 or 45 series because I think that Martin uses better quality flitch of wood and its better people in this series. So, I would find the best playing and sounding one in this series within my budget. The 45 series seems to have the nicest wood.
Staying within the Martin school but not the brand I'd check out Santa Cruz which is the better Martin, in my opinion. A used Froggy Bottom H should also be in your sights but it might be more difficult to find a used one under $4000. Not impossible, just difficult. Instead of springing for a new guitar, have you tried a different flavour of strings? Maybe that is all your 000-28EC needs. For a left field suggestion, check out a Lowden F35 in redwood and rosewood or spruce and rosewood. |

I have owned a Martin EC and also an OM-42 (which was in sitka/koa). Both bought pre-owned well under your price ceiling. It is always personal taste but for me, playing fingerstyle and strumming, the sound of the OM-42 was much more enjoyable.
