I believe that 'fingerstyle' is a high level term that includes finger-picking, Travis picking, frailing, etc. The quote I used above was from the Acoustic Fingerstyle Website and seems to treat it that way.

Hi Plexiprs,

"Fingerstyle" has evolved so much into it's own genre. Give a listen to some of the artists I listed in my previous response. Although each artist has their own unique style, and some are quite different from one another, the common thread that runs through all of them is clear. They are all (for the most part) solo artists that deliver a rich, often complex collection of compositions that fully stand on their own as solo instrumental pieces. The emphasis has gone away from repetitive right hand technique in favor of melody, harmony, counterpoint and moving bass lines. I feel that lumping together all acoustic guitar techniques that use the fingers of the right hand to play individual strings and calling it either fingerstyle or fingerpicking does both an injustice. I've seen the link you referenced above and would say that it is partially correct, although, in my opinion, somewhat narrow in focus and a bit dated.

I've listened to almost all on your list, and have music from 2/3 of them. I've always called them solo guitarists, or solo acoustic guitarists. It seems some feel a need to create a genre to define guitarists with more detail.

I think this definition is more for the non-guitarists in the listening audience. What's funny is look for the CD's of these artists in different music stores and THEY categorize them from Country to Progrssive, to Alternative. Seems everyone has to have one label to make it easy for the consumer to identify with them.

I just like it, fingers picks or toes
