For the jazz guitarist
I am trying to put together a little recording of the Coltrane version of "My Favorite Things" for my Dad (his favorite song) and I can't find the song anywhere, wondering if you can help.
I have the vamp going from Em9 to Bm7... The line "Brown paper packages tied up with string.." I have as Cmaj7 - Bm7 - Bm7(A) - Fmaj7 Here is where I am stuck... "These are a few of my favorite things..." that ascending run of jazz chords has me stumped. Could be a crazy ten chord run or a simple four chord run... either would be appreciated.

Except I keep the Em7 to F#m7 going for the first 8 bars, till the Am7. |

you might also want to check out
www.coltrane.room34.com for more info... also, that F#min7b5 to B7 change is the standard ii-V in E minor but it would also be fine to think Amin7 to B7 melody up on top note 5xx555 fav- 5xx557 -or- 5xx555 -ite then the B7 as 7x78xx edit edit edit...the 5xx555 is just an Amin of course.... 5x5555 wouldd bee thuh korreckted Amin7.... end of edit........well, one more before someone comes in and says "don't you mean F#min7b5 to B7b9 is the standard blah blah blah .......get off my porch you rotten little kids.....Daddy???? end of edit.... you might find the standard open Amin7 a more "strummable" chord.... min7b5....where did you get that from???...is that the illegal version of the Real Book???? I've got the New Real Book and it doesn't contain My Favorite Things....that's why I asked...the print (the actual type) of what you had reminded me of the print in the NRB... no, I'm not the police...I've never seen the original Real Book.... there he is officer!....there he is! ok, buddy, you and your gnomes....in the wagon...in the wagon... crows...

Here's how I play that phrase for a chord solo. I'm not with a guitar at the moment, but I think this is how I do it. It's a very nice progression on a steel string. Let the notes ring as much as possible (try to fret the B on the 7th fret of the E string while letting the Am9 ring out - its a bit of a stretch, but it sounds sooo nice). Also, let the D13 chord ring while you reach down with your pinky to fret the F# on the 7th fret of the B string, then slide down the D on the 3rd fret.
-0--7--5--0--------------------------------------------------- -0-----0--0--7--3--3--10--8---1------------------------------- -5-----5--5--------4--11--10--2------------------------------- -2-----3--4--------4------9---2------------------------------- -0--------5--------------------------------------------------- -------------------3------9---3------------------------------- I guess those chords would be... Am9 F(add #4) D13 GM7 C#7b5 C6/G The chromatic line on the 4th string (E F F#) works well on this phrase. There's a rather loose/implied continuation of that line with the G on the 6th string followed by the F# on the 3rd string followed by the F on the 3rd string then finally the E on the 4th string. So if you ignore the octave jumps, the chromatic line for this phrase would look like this (E F F# G F# F E). Enjoy. Last edited by 815C; 05-24-2003 at 09:23 AM. |

Giant Steps.
AKA the Coltrane Matrix. I'm forever working on a solo arrangement for the second record. It's a really fun tune to think about, playing it is another matter. |

Thanks again, guys... you each have been a great help. We are getting there slowly but surely.
I will try to post an Mpeg when I am finished to show you my pitiful attempt I just got this great Coltrane DVD... kind of a biography deal. It is really nice and has some old concert footage. The "My Favorite Things" cut is outdoors, grainy black and white at night... you can tell it is cold because the steam is just pouring off the musicians. Man, the sounds coming out of that guy Peace... Tom PS - thanks, Mapletrees... I had been to that site a few times. It's great!
