Shower Thought: Do Martin & Taylors sound like...
Was watching the video below and thought that Taylors sound like single-coil electric guitars (strats) and Martins sound like humbucker electric guitars (Les Pauls).

I don't hear it, but my ears and brain are nearing 70 and have a mind of their own...

While it is important to keep your guitars humidified, playing them in the shower is overdoing it.

If you mean relative to each other the difference is like the difference between single coils and humbuckers, with the Taylor being the single and the Martin being the himbucker, then yes, i know what you mean and that'd be a great way to describe it to an electric guitar player. You could also liken a Gibson to a nice growly P90 while your at it.
You may still be crazy tho. I'm not qualified to help with that

What about those Rainsong ones?

I think the fact that Paul Davids still owns that Martin D42 and does NOT still own that Taylor 716 says it all.

I've always thought that from Single coil -----> Double coil is like:
Taylor--> Martin--> Guild--> Gibson. Of course this is a GROSS oversimplification as there is much variety in each brand. But, something for everybody.

I don't like comparisons like this. The guy with the Martin D-42 is playing well over the soundhole whereas the guy with the Taylor is playing at the rear of the soundhole. This alone affects the tone generated by the guitars with the Taylor playing position automatically pushing a more brittle tone than the Martin's. Then, the Martin is a dreadnought and the Taylor is a Grand Symphony that is more balanced across the tonal spectrum than the bass-heavy Martin. A better comparison would be a Taylor 710 or the new 717 dreadnoughts and the Martin D-42 with the player's picking hand in the same position over the soundhole.

I don't know about the Taylor/Martin comparison, but to my ear single coils sound more open, more lush with blooming overtones and crystalline clarity edginess, while humbuckers (and mind you I like 'em) are almost too perfect, and maybe that's why they sound so good distorted.

You were watching a video, while playing your guitar, in the shower?

The fact that I still own Taylor guitars and haven't kept ANY Martin I've had says something different.

On the other hand, Taylor guitars usually have a wider nutwidth (ala Les Paul) than Martin.

New Martins pretty much have the same nut width as Taylor’s, 1 3/4 inches.
