Default NGD - Michaud OO-R - Pernambuco / Swiss Moon Spruce

Hello AGF!

I am pleased to share a NGD with this great community. A couple of weeks ago my Michaud OO-R arrived - it is as gorgeous as it is playable.

Joel's a terrific guy and amazing builder - I took his lead on many of the creative choices here and am more than happy, how magical it can be to just let the luthier do their thing. Also worth noting - for my taste, the neck profile is absolutely perfect. Supportive chunkiness.

Here are the specs, pics and a video below. The video is an original tune of mine called "The Builder", recorded in mono to be more practical.

Specs:
OO-R body shape
Pernambuco back, sides, bridge, fretboard, binding, and headstock
Swiss Moon Spruce top (painted black, inspired by Larry's former Michaud)
Black neck
Bevel
Fan fret 25 - 25.5
1 25/32 /// 2 1/4
Rodgers Tuners and matching end graft insert

And here it is in action - as I mentioned above an original tune of mine called "The Builder" (YouTube is still "processing" the higher-res version, pardon the 360p).

Obligatory amateur caveat - I was also blessed to have "taken delivery" of a son in April, and as such am squeezed for time to polish up the playing and recording some more before sharing. Nevertheless, hopefully you'll get a sense of the sound of this weeks old guitar.

What a looker! Congratulations (for the new family member too )

I'm still learning about fan frets so I'm interested to learn the thinking behind your selection of 25 - 25.5.

Very nice guitar and interesting composition. My question, what material used for the nut? Looks almost metal in the pic.

Very nice looking 00-R and demo. The flight case choice is pretty cool too. Welcome to the Michaud family and enjoy yours in good health!

Thanks all for the comments and enjoying it with me, I've been having a ton of fun with this guitar. With regard to the fan-fret and nut/saddle material:

Fan-fret - from experience with other guitars I find 1" to be an excessive spread for my playing style, so 25 - 25.5 still gives me the benefits of sweeter highs (due to the shorter scale) without stretching it out too much on the bass. Additionally, the low string will stay mostly in D and I use medium strings to there was no practical need for anything longer.

Nut / saddle material - I forgot to mention that! It is bone that Joel somehow dyed with magical luthier dust. Looks awesome, right?

Would love to hear what you think of Pernambuco as the b/s with this build. If there is any way to compare against other tonewoods, just curious to know what you think so far. I have been recently in a discovery mode with my adi/pernambuco Brondel and love the tone so far... magical and musical combined.

Thanks all for the comments and compliments, makes me very happy to share the experience and music.

To answer Kenny B's question re: Pernambuco:

I had not heard of it as a tonewood, to be honest, and consider myself fairly "agnostic" when it comes to back and sides, finding that builder, body size, and top play a much bigger role.

Ultimately I opted for it because Pernambuco has sentimental value - I am from Brazil and this is the tree that gave Brazil its name (Pau-Brasil, or Brazilwood, in Portuguese).

In terms of the tone itself, I find that is is incredibly balanced, almost linear from top to bottom; I keep expecting to hear what it *doesn't* have (e.g. "the mids are a little scooped" or "the bass is thinner") but that has just not happened.

That is one magical guitar and fantastic playing. Congrats.

I think Bruce Sexuaer gets a lot of the credit for bringing Pernambuco into the luthier world, if he wasn't the first he was close to it. He loves the stuff as long as it is perfectly quartered at least. He has had cracking with flat sawn pieces. It is a magical wood apparently and from this video, I hear nothing to change my mind!
