I don't know the backstory but love the song. What is the backstory?

Sometimes I have to tell myself (mentally), "The job here is to make them feel like crying, not to cry myself. Get a grip!"

Haven't read the thread yet, but...
At my last Barn Jam someone called In Color by Jamey Johnson. I was crying by the end. When I was a kid, way back when I was in 2nd grade, someone brought in a 45 of Seasons In The Sun by Terry Jacks. I sat there in class and cried my eyes out.

I nominate Glennwillow’s The Leader of the Band, now appearing over in the Show and Tell forum.

There a recording of Guy Clark doing LA Freeway towards the end of his life…. I think it was a birthday tribute concert. I think it’s more the fact that he sounds so tired and clearly not in good health than the song itself, but that particular recording can get to me a bit sometimes.

What. I've read this whole thread and no one has mentioned, not once, Puff the Magic Dragon. That song makes me cry every time. Poor Puff! Poor anyone who loves and is left behind forever.

"Summer's Almost Gone" by the Doors. Pianist George Winston does it on his album of Doors music. It holds up very well even without the lyrics.

+1 for 4+20
And one of the saddest loneliest song I know is Colin Hay’s ‘’I just don’t think I’ll get over you’. https://youtu.be/3Pvi4uKuawk It’s a great sad tune with impressive open tuning guitar playing to boot. Sting’s ‘I’m so happy, I can’t stop crying’ is another heartbreaker, but I much prefer his acoustic version. The steel guitar on the original makes it sound hokey, to me. Dave |

Thanks for this one. As much as I love Molly playing bluegrass, she's just as good when she decides to play folk. That solo was perfection. Beautiful performance.

John Hiatt so frequently knocks me out.
He recently did an album with Jerry Douglas. This song took him about forty years to write. It's about the loss of his brother when they both were very young. |
