I would love to hear your take on this one.

The Last Nail from Fallen Angel. That was the album that marked a decline in sales from his two earlier blockbusters Home Free and Souvenirs, but I remember it well. It seems that when the buyers of his two classics graduated from college, they moved on.

But after a few less-heralded albums he blasted onto the Adult Contemporary charts with The Innocent Age, a double album with three radio hits: Same Old Lang Syne, Run for the Roses, and Leader of the Band, which reclaimed the acoustic finger-picking territory once blazed by Stephen Stills a decade earlier.

Dan Fogelberg. Passed up by history. Gone too soon. A gifted songwriter, an unparalleled singer, one of the best guitarists of the seventies, talented arranger. Given to lush arrangements, which may have put off his original folk fans.

One of my favorite songs, Glenn, and you just did a [typically!] wonderful job on it. Thanks.

Nice job, Glenn. A classic for sure.

My wife and I saw Dan in a solo concert at an outdoor venue several years ago. Just a guitar and a piano. What a great show he provided.

It was a hot, humid summer night and he kept putting talcum powder on his fretting hand to keep his hand from sticking to the neck and fretboard. Large quantities of talcum powder. By the end of the concert the neck of his Martin was starting to turn white. He laughed every time he shook out more talcum…was funny to watch.

Thanks for a great post.
Roger

Interesting comments. I agree that his lush arrangements on his later recordings may have lost him some, maybe even a lot of his audience. I think many people hungered for the sound from just him and an acoustic guitar, maybe a little harmony, much like "Leader of the Band."

I don't blame him for wanting to try other things; a performer has to make himself happy. But sometimes a performer loses the core of his audience this way; sometimes he finds new fans.

Hi Roger,

Thanks for your comments!

I would have loved to see Dan Fogelberg play live with just a guitar or a piano! You were very lucky, talcum powder and all!

I hope you and your wife and your whole family are doing well!

- Glenn

Beautiful Glenn. When I saw the title of this thread, I was pretty sure that Dan Fogelberg would be another artist that your unique voice works very well with and your D-35 sounded exquisite accompanying you.

Thank you Bob!

How nice of you to take time to listen and comment! I'm so glad you thought this came across reasonably well!

I'm also glad you thought the old D-35 sounded good, too!

I hope things are well for you, Bob; you take care!

Agree completely! Dan is from Peoria IL, just a couple of hours from where I grew up. Such a talented, diverse songwriter and musician. At one point, I was only familiar with his mellow acoustic songs and really enjoyed that side of him. Then I got his live dvd and saw he was much more than just that. He could also be a high-energy electric player and put on quite a show. Gone way too soon.

And of course, another wonderful performance in Glenn’s video! Wish I had your vocal range! Very nice, as always, my friend.

Thanks for your thoughts and comments, Marty!

I wish I had a chance to see Dan Fogelberg play live but I never did.

I'm pleased that you thought my cover of "Leader of the Band" came out okay! That song does stretch a person's vocal range -- all those high G notes. It took a little practice to get used to all that high singing.

I hope you and your wife are doing well!

Take care,
- Glenn

Glenn,

Loved it!

This song was written for you. It fits your voice and your playing on the 35.

Didn't read the other comments so I don't want to repeat any praise you received but well done and thank you for posting, I really enjoyed this one.

Thank you, too, for the compliment on the sound quality. I am very fortunate to have some decent equipment, and I have been working at audio recording for a good long while.

I have been enjoying your videos, as well! Be well, Tom!

- Glenn
