I gather I might get to see this one if I manage to make it to Ian's in July (work's been a nightmare, I'm in Finland at the moment). If I get there, I'll bring my Baranik to meet the Kostals (Jason is a big fan of Mike's guitars, and has owned two of them!)
Would you bring the first CX too? I'd love to spend some time with it!

Got some pics last night:

Time to think about binding the body, so here it is routed for the binding:

And here it is, binding in place and glued up:

I have been fairly anal/obsessive-compulsive about the specs for this guitar (as are a lot of us who commission guitars I suppose?), particularly with respect to the neck dimensions, string spacing etc. However, the binding is one area where I wrote on the spec sheet, "Jason to do what he thinks is best". So, I have no idea at all what is underneath that tape. Very much looking forward to finding out. I'm a "less-is-more" guy and Jason knows this so I'm guessing it will be something conservative; hold off with the snakewood!

Cheers,
Steve

Yes Phil, "sweet".

So, the tape is off and here are my bindings being scraped - looks like ABW to me? I'll check with Jason.

Now time to think about the end-graft. Jason is making quite a name for himself with his decorative end-grafts. I said to Jason that I very much liked what he did with Eric's end graft and wondered if he could do something similar but specific to my guitar?

Looks like he has thought of something...

Cheers,
Steve

Absolutely (though it's the larger JX). You have a lot to answer for, Michael... I came in that day interested to play a Bourgeois but having promised my wife I wouldn't buy anything... then you put that Baranik in my hands. The rest, as they say, is history! (apart from the wife, who is very much still current, but is showing signs of developing a taste for handmade cellos against which the cost of my guitars will pale in comparison)

Steve, this is looking fantastic! I love watching these special builds taking shape. Will you be bringing your Traugott in July - I'm dying to try one.

Yes I probably will. The aim is to bring the Traugott and the Kostal. Three of my ex-guitars will be there tho'!

Although 95% (indeed nearer 100%) of my current playing is nylon guitar, I think most who are coming would rather hear the Traugott than my Woodfield (which is stellar but of less interest to the majority).

I'm rather hoping that the arrival of the Kostal will swing me back to steel. The fact of the matter is (and I know you know this) there are only so many hours in the day after work, cooking, and wife/kids etc. That means I have to be pretty focussed on what tunes I'm learning at any one time. If one eye is on steel and the other nylon, I start to go cross-eyed!

cheers,
Steve

Guilty as charged with mitigating circumstances...

Handmade cellos?! I can help you there too!

How about like this?!!

As you can see, the endgraft complements what Jason did with the backstrip beautifully; the use of sapwood in the endgraft to tie it in with the backstrip is inspired, as is the fact that the break between the ebony is offset for both.

Class.

Cheers,
Steve

The end graft and backstrip match is very cool.

Bold but yet very refined.
