Smile Tony McManus' 'The Emigrant's Farewell' - Tuning

Hi guys,,

Anyone happen to know the tuning for Tony McManus' 'The Emigrant's Farewell'?

It's such a beautiful piece of music and I'd love to learn it but I cannot figure out the tuning!!

Here's the tune:

(If anyone out there also has the tab...that would be more than awesome)

Oh,is that all?? Feeling rather sheepish right now.
Thought it might have been in some weird and wonderful alternate tuning.

Thanks HE! I really appreciate you letting me know so quickly. Have a great weekend

Simon,
Aside from watching Tony play, I also made a point of reading all the comments. One in particular noted that he often plays in dropped D.

I then went back, and watched & listened for fretting positions, etc, that would indicate predictable sounds if this tuning was indeed used.

Good point HE and certainly taken. Will do this in future.

All the best,
Simon.

Interesting stuff, the playing, tuning and particularly the guitar as I'm interested in trying DADGAD
though that guitar is a bit pricy for me.

I did a bit of research on it and the maker says,

"I crafted this fanned fret version of my model G1 for guitar virtuoso Tony McManus. Tony plays a lot in DADGAD and C tunings. The scale lengths I selected for the subtle fan of this guitar are perfect for addressing these tuning requirements. And while the guitar is meant to “live” in DADGAD, it also works well for double dropped D, dropped D and can even be tuned up to standard tuning (although should not be left there for extended periods)."

So it seems to be specifically a guitar for 'D tunings', is this right ?.

Yes Westman, the fan frets scale length help with the dropped bottom strings. The extra tension stops the bottom string flopping around like elastic bands when tuned down. The top strings also really ring! I've found a Luther here in Oz who is going to make one for me next year and cannot wait

Thank you so much Glen Echo Creek. That's an amazing sounding version. In Orkney tuning too!!! I really appreciate you passing this on!

Maybe this great guitar player can help you out; Stephen Wake from Scotland.

He certainly is a man of beautiful pieces, accompanied with very good/accurate tabs.

The Emigrants Farewell is one of my favourite tunes from Tony McManus' many great performances over the internet. The TAB for this song seems completely unavailable anywhere on the internet unfortunately.

Hi Peter,

Thank you so much for your message (and private message too), I really appreciate it.

As it happens, I was lucky enough to have a few Skype lessons with Stephen late last year.
I had to put on hold due to financial reasons (who'd have kids eh??) but hope to have some again soon. I had asked him if he knew the Emigrants Farewell back then. He did not at the time but by the next lesson had worked it out and the YouTube link that you shared is the very tutorial video that he made for me! I was playing it fully within a week

If anyone is interested in learning (or listening to) Celtic guitar, I thoroughly recommend reaching out to Stephen..he's a lovely guy, an amazing musician and great teacher.
