Thanks Gents! The darker wood in the rosette is Gidgee and is the same wood as the bindings. The medium wood is Australian Blackwood which matches the back, sides, and headstock veneer. I think it's going to pull the whole instrument together.

Getting very near the end. All that's left is to install the tuners and the fixed-pin bridge, then she gets her first strings. I love all the reds that are coming through on that King Billy Pine top and how they pick up so nicely with the fretboard. As with the previous zouk he built for me, Jack is going to make two nuts, one for octave strings and another for unison.
The figuring on the mulga fretboard is so lovely that I decided against fretmarkers. I really love the unique look of the QLD Maple neck. I don't own another instrument with a neck that looks like that. The headstock overlay is Australian Blackwood to match the back and sides and the Schertler tuners are ready to be installed. The case is a long neck banjo case that fits this zouk pretty near perfectly.

It looks magnificent, Jim.
I noticed that you're putting Schertler tuners on it. Using those is a good call - at one time or another I've had every brand of open gear tuners currently being made on my instruments, including Waverlys, Gotohs, Grovers and even some custom made for me by the Rodgers father and son team in the United Kingdom. The Schertlers are every bit as smooth and accurate as the Rodgers tuners (at a fraction of the price) and better than all the others. So I suspect you'll be happy with them. Wade Hampton Miller |

Wade, going with the Schertlers was in large part about curiosity after reading so much praise for them. They take up a bit more room than some other tuners and Jack had to elongate his usual headstock to make them work. I have Gotoh 510s on a lot of my instruments and I like those very much. I wanted to go with something lighter on this one because of the extended scale. I figured with the longer neck and the weight of the mulga fretboard, it might be a good idea to stay away from heavier tuners.

Sealed gear Gotoh 510 minis are my favorite tuners, and I’ve replaced open gear tuners with them more than once. That includes open gear 510’s and Gotoh Kluson-style tuners; the sealed gear 510’s are just more precise and accurate. When you swap out the stock metal buttons with wooden or plastic aftermarket buttons, they’re almost as lightweight as open gears.
But the Schertler gears are very precise, which is why I just put a set on my new Eastman J-45 copy. If the Schertler tuners you got are as accurate as mine are, I think you’ll be very happy with them. whm |

This is the bridge, carved from a piece of gidgee. Every type of wood used on this zouk will be brand new to me and that's pretty exciting.

The bridge is in place and the glue is drying.
