Cheating G Minor Chord
Talking about cheating when playing guitar. I wanted to see what the feed back would be on my G minor chord.
3 E x 0 3 0 3 e

Which end is up? Either way, you don't get G-Bb-D out of it. |

Depends what the rest of the band is playing.

If you hit the B string at the third fret to give a D, you get G minor...3 x 0 3 3 3
But it’s just as easy to barre at the 3rd fret and play 355333, and it sounds better. The usual disclaimers apply......IMHO, YMMV etc.

That is a Gm triad. It might sound a bit thin. If 355333 isn't a possibility, I agree with Jaybee that 3x0333 is probably best. Last edited by JerrysGuitarBar; 09-02-2019 at 09:24 AM. |

Yes, there's no Bb, but there's B to take its place.

If you leave the 2nd string open you have a G9 chord (GAFGBG), although I personally do not care for the 9th that low in the voicing.
You have no Bb - so you don't have a Gm. You have the 7th (F) on the 4th string. If you're using a pick I'm not sure how you're muting the second string. So my feedback would be to never use this for a Gm. XX5333 or 3XX333 are your best bets for a simplified Gm.

So for example to play that lower A note after the G tonality notes have been played and are still ringing has a different effect than playing it as simple down-strum. I'm thinking this in my head compositionally (I can't play guitar and type at the same time) but later on I want to try to fool around with this idea. That may just be me, but compositionally I often start with "what rule or expectation should I break this time..."

Here's a nice easy open-voiced Gm, without a barre: -3- pinky -x- mute with ring -3- ring -0- -x- mute with middle -3- middle Other 3-finger combinations will also work.

Doesn't seem like a proper Gm but that's okay.

According to my app 'Chordbank', the above fingering is 66% of the way to being a Fsus2/G.
