Default Steve Kaufman's "Learning to Flatpick" DVD Series is Excellent!

I bought this 3 DVD series off of ebay in like new condition for $36. It has been the best $36 I ever spent on instructional materials. Started off pretty basic but disc 2 is getting more difficult with crosspicking. This crosspicking is going to take me quite some time to get half way right. I start off ok but then start thinking about it and everything gets jumbled up. Steve even throws in some rhythm stuff from time to time.

If anyone is thinking about getting into Bluegrass, this DVD series is the way to go. It's a lot of fun to.

PS - I believe his Acoustic Camp starts next week. It is held in my home town but I just don't have the funds to go.

Thanks for this post. I have gotten into bluegrass for the first time earlier this year, and I've been thinking about getting these DVDs.

Tell us more about what you've learned from disk 1

Disc 1 is geared for an absolute beginner. The first song is a basic flatpick version of Cripple Creek followed by the back up rhythm. He then goes in to different versions of "Hand Me Down My Walking Cane", "Wildwood Flower", "Wayfaring Stranger", "Eighth of January", and "Bully of the Town". Throughout the DVD he gradually throws in embellishments such as hammer-ons, bends, and 1/8th note runs. On "Bully of the Town" he threw in a C9 chord that I was not accustomed to. I'm still working on that song even though I started disc 2. This C9 chord was an exception. The rest of them are the common ones that everyone learns starting out.

Hope this helps.
