I'm very sorry for your loss, especially under those circumstances. Our pets are an extension of our human family, and their loss is felt heavily by all.

Last fall, our 16yo cat, Alex, passed away with both my wife and me out of the country. My daughter was 12yo at the time, and she took Alex's loss very hard. So, our family friend had to deal with Alex's death and a grieving tween for the rest of the week. When we returned home, we adopted two new kittens, who just turned 1yo a couple of weeks ago.

Thoughts to you, your son, and the rest of your family.

I feel for you. I still miss every dog I've ever had.

When I was traveling back to Virginia on Monday, I heard this tune on XM and it pretty much summed up my desires.

Sorry for the loss of your furry friend. Dogs grok us.
They are unconditional love teachers who are as happy walking by your side, as napping the day away.

So sorry to hear that, Tnfiddler. I've said goodbye to quite a few critters, but never in quite such a sudden way. I suggest you sit that new fella down and tell him all about the adventures your family had with Sasha over the years. As smart and clever as standard poodle are, I'll bet you've got dozens of stories about her.

What's the new guy's name?

Just catching up to this, and sorry for your loss.

Ironic for me as I just had to read the Cali DMV book to renew my license. It included a section about hitting an animal. It closes with the statement.... No animal should be left to die on the side of a road.

There is no way to reverse the pain of the loss of a pet. Folks that hit and run are the worst...

We didn't name him, but Prince is his name. He's a bundle of fun for sure. He was able to spend a couple of months with Sasha and they didn't bond very well. He was young, full of energy and wide open all the time and she was old and grumpy. She would look at him and give a low guttural growl and I know she was saying, "don't even think about it, whippersnapper!!” Here’s our new boy.

I have been dog-less for the last 3 years. But the beach I do my PT at is a "dog beach". I love these loyal creatures. In fact I was discussing unconditional love with my daughter and exclaimed that only dogs can do that full time 24/7.

My daughter has just realized her 13 year old Cocker Spaniel might need that finale decision. So this weekend i am picking up her beloved "Honey" and bringing it back to my house 2 hours North of her to evaluate. I am planning on bringing the dog to the dog beach for a week to see if the LA vet is right.

The day I got my house in 1992 I went out and got an Australian shepherd mix, Jasmine.
I am sort of looking for a mellow older mutt with my 63 year old knee in mind. One that doesn't mind my wild dynamic range of 7 acoustics.

I am so sorry that your family dog was hit and killed. That is a huge, emotional blow.

I am so sorry this happened. Dogs are truly members of the family.

I feel especially badly for your son. I know this circumstance exactly, as this happened to my dog and me when I was a child. I sobbed until I physically could no longer do so.

Be there for your family members. This will not ease quickly. Hug your son and anybody else who needs it. Let yourself be hugged. Take things a day at a time.

May peace come to all of you.

I am so sorry for your loss... It's tough on the whole family to lose the family dog, especially in a sudden loss like that. You have my sympathy, especially your son.

I am so sorry for you and your family's loss. Dogs are the best. They teach us humans to love unconditionally.

Folks, I know you mean well but this happened 6 months ago and resurrecting it may not be the best thing for the OP. I’m closing this for now.

Thanks,

Bob

I am very sorry for your loss.
I know all too well how painful that can be.
Again, sorry, and be well, try to carry on.
Allow yourself to grieve.
