Default Build Thread: Doerr Solace ** #6 - One Coat of Clear **

I purchased a Doerr MD (Cedar/Mahogany) directly from Tom’s back in February 2021. I was so impressed with the build quality, playability and sound that I started the process of researching and starting my new build. I had contacted Tom back in early 2020 about such a possibility but was unsure of the body size. Now with having purchased the MD from his "available guitars" website and also purchased a Legacy Select from another forum member, I was finally ready to move on with my build. I decided to go again with a Solace body size because I had bought a used one in 2019 and felt that it would fit in best with my ever increasing guitar collection.

Specs:

Solace Signature

Tunnel Redwood top with African Blackwood b/s

Cutaway, Tiled Rosette, Fret Markers, Madagascar fretboard, Custom back strip, Sound Port, Custom neck profile similar to my Collings SJ

25.4” scale, 1.75” nut width, 2.25” string spacing

Note: This Solace will incorporate a new body size, similar to his previous Solace but slightly larger.

Old Solace

Upper Bout 11.125″
Lower Bout 16.25"
Length of Box 20.5″
Depth of Neck Blocks 3.625″
Depth of Tail Block 4.5″

New Solace

Upper Bout: 12.625"
Lower Bout: 16.75"
Length of box: 20.75
Depth of Neck block: 3.875"
Depth of Tail block: 4.875"

Whoa! Congrats!!
Tom is wonderful to work with and offers a great process for each client. Also, he's worked with Redwood for a long time and knows his way around this tonewood....you're in good hands (as you know!).
I'll enjoy following your build!

This looks great, so far! I have yet to play a Doerr. Would love a Mod D, but need to play something by Tom before I can commit. One day!

Maybe Tom Doerr can come to the next BIG?

This will be a fun one to watch! The wood choices? Oh, my. When I hear of so many players wanting to try a smaller size body for comfort you have decided to go a little bigger! That is encouraging. This could be a monster for all the right reasons. All the best!

Thanks Tom. We really missed going to BIG this year. Hopefully we can go next time around. I am enjoying the pictures and videos from the event. It looks like everyone had a great time, possibly the highlight of the year for many as it was for me in 2019.

I went with the biggest size because quite frankly I am stocked up on medium sized guitars, SJs and Concert sized. I have one OM guitar for a small body which I plan on keeping. I just started liking the bigger sized bodies, and the Collings SJ size has been my favorite for many years. It helps having a large frame and long arms, I don't feel an uncomfortable stretch when playing the larger body guitars.

I’m a small guy and like big guitars, though now I really like arm and rib bevels for a little more comfort. So much sound with so little effort.
