Default pickguard or no pickguard, which do you like

I got a used eastman e1ss , but it came without a pickguard.

I can get the oem firestrip style
pickguard for 35 bucks, but my wife says she likes it as is. She says the firestripe is too busy looking on the toned colored top. I should get a clear pickguard or a black tear drop if I have to get one at all.

what do you guys think?

Clear, in that case. Happy wife, happy life.

She's absolutely correct.

Personally, I think pickguards on acoustic guitars look silly. Also, the less stuff stuck to the top of my guitars, the better. I am sure other feel differently, which is why some have pickguards on their acoustic guitars and others don't. I am just expressing my personal preference, rather than making a statement as to what others should think and prefer.

Pickguards do serve a very practical purpose for those who seem to strike the top of their guitar with fingers and/or pick while playing. My fingers on my picking hand never touch the top of the guitar while I am playing, and I don't play with a pick. So for me, not having a pickguard makes sense.

I may be totally useless here since I like both. What is your playing style? Do you think that you will mark up the guitar so will need a pick guard? I think that I will give the edge to having a clear pick guard if you need one but black would be pretty stunning. See? I really am of no use here. Nice looking guitar! Good luck with your decision.

Best,
Jayne

I have the same guitar and took the pick guard off. I have always preferred the clean look on acoustic and electrics. Even when strumming I don't have a problem with hitting the guitar with the pick so for me it serves no purpose.

I favour no pickguard or a clear one. Lovely guitar.

Clear (which is basically "none" but with the protection) or black but yes, the tiger one is too busy for that guitar. Also I tend to favor pickguards as I think most guitars (and guitar players) benefit from them being there. Unless, of course you only fingerpick as already mentioned here.

I hate pickguards. It's a beautiful guitar without one. If you really feel you need one then go clear. Definitely not a fan of that 'fire stripe' pickguard.

Looks great both ways to me. Wouldn't mind seeing a mock-up with a black guard, in that same shape.

If it's just the protection you want, I'd go with clear.

Go clear.

I'd prefer my guitars to have no pickguards, but I end up seeming to buy guitars that have them. I really don't mind their looks, at least the ones that are not oversized or overfancy. I don't mind tortoise shell colors at all...I like the look of tortoise shell.

But no pickguard looks as good to me as the wood under it. So if you're gonna have one, I vote clear.

I normally don't like them but they seem better when they are on darker topped guitars. Yours looks OK either way.

I might be one of the few that likes the pickguard version and pickguards in general on guitars even if they serve no purpose for me.
