Well, I was feeling greedy initially and thoughts crossed my mind of a 517 AND then a 317 as well after all the happy thread-age.

But let me state, Shades, you will not need the 517 unless you need a spare guitar with the same neck, for some reason. Let your 717 open out a couple of months and it will cover everything you could do on the 5, the 3, the D, the OM, the OOO......do I need to continue. My 717 is staggering, I’m staggered! I need to ditch some guitars before the hubbub catch on to this and the non Vs are worthless when the musical chairs stop. Ahhhhhhh! And I cut my picking thumb again, can’t believe it. Playing with a bandaid. But on we stagger.

Congrats! I never really gave bear claw any thoughts but there is a 317 with it at my local dealer that really caught my eye that I now want. So many of you are going for the 717 that it makes me want to re-evaluate it up against the 317. I really liked them both but the difference in price at this point in time is an issue for me. I think I will be just about as happy with a 317. I just really loved the volume I got from it. It did seem louder than the 717. The 717 just sounded sweeter to me. Can't go wrong with either really.

Shades, that's very exciting. I'm glad to know that you found a good one with the tone you're looking for. They are certainly nice looking and feeling guitars, otherwise.

Congrats on a good start to round 2, my friend. Delighted your first impressions are positive. Looking forward to your thoughts in a couple of months after you’ve played it in some and ditched the Elixirs. Sure is a busy top - cooked, clawed and heavy silking. Guess that’s the trifecta for you folks who dig it.

Do these come standard without a pickguard? I'd have to put one on, but that's just me. The top would get chewed up with a pick over a number of years.

Great looking guitar....very classy look to it. I will give Taylor props for having very good note separation in their guitars.

Jonathan, yours is particularly striking! Love the figure in the top. Very happy to read about how much you like it! I agree with BluesKing777 however; I dont see the 517 fitting into the stable.

Also ...careful to not dismiss the D-18! They are an iconic industry standard for a good reason. Judge each guitar on its own merit, lest you be 'pitting' ...and dismissing one. (been there done that)

Shades, best of luck with the new 717! Your posts have been both a joy and a learning experience for me. It makes me realize my thought process as I try to pick out guitars isn't so crazy[emoji2]

Many congrats and I'm really glad this worked out for you. Love the bear claw - I think it looks great. These are great instruments. My lowly 317e sent a limited edition I had recently picked up packing back to its original owner. I'm hugely impressed with these Grand Pacific instruments.

Don't laugh, but I'm likely using my credit for the limited edition I bought (and then sent back) to get a 717. I think it will complement my 317 nicely. I wonder which one of us will be the first to own 2 grand pacifics? LOL

Thanks so much for your enthusiastic report of your experience and enjoyment of the new Taylor 717! I own a 2016 818e, and I am just going to have to demo a 717e at my local facility and compare it to the 818e. The 818e is a fantastic instrument and it was my dream to always have an 800 series of either the Grand Orchestra or a dread, which was no longer made and it appears the Grand Pacific is taking the spot the 810 etc. held. If, and that's a big "IF", the Grand Pacific does to me what it did to you I will be trying for a trade. I have 4 guitars now and really should dwindle to 2, a "favorite" Taylor and my new Collings which I really like. So, you got my GAS up to boiling, thanks!

This is so true!! Ive done it too with acoustics. It’s sort of like saying “how come my Les Paul doesn’t sound like a Strat?” Let each guitar speak with its own voice.
