hey now wait just a gawl durn minute! Weiss headstocks look purty! (of course the rosewood burl overlay doesn't hurt the whole vibe)

of course the nasty-bluesy-angelic tone erupting from my weissenheimer overshadows any headstock oddness

Haven't been here in awhile, but what do I see when I come back? A Seagull headstock discussion!

I own 2 Seagulls - a 6-string and a 12-string - and a variety of other guitars. IMHO, the sound an instrument makes is of vastly greater importance than the looks of the instrument - or the looks of the headstock. I also own a Giannini Craviola 12-string, so the "traditional" look - or lack thereof - is something I obviously don't care too much about...

I felt my old Aria LW-15 had a very "Seagull-esque" headstock - only reason I no longer have the Aria is because it had a 1 11/16" nut - and I prefer a 1 3/4" or greater nut (like, say, the Seagull 1.8" nut...)

To each their own - but, there were even people who bought the Edsel...

In the final analysis, keep doing this...

Yeah, I'm glad we could discuss the Seagull headstock again. But hey, the first one I was part of I said I didn't like it. Now I have seen the light. So maybe it's not all bad.

This forum, and the guy I heard playing one, is what made me consider one. I heard too many good things about them not to at least give them a try.

Glad I did. Thanks to AGF.

Default Design rationale

According to the folks at Seagull/Godin, their headstock is superior in it's design as it maintains a straighter line from the nut to the tuner, making for more stable tuning longevity and ease.

Default Seagull Headstocks

Remind me too much of "Schlitzie" from the movies.

He was quite a movie star at one time, probably would like that Seagull headstock

I still prefer the Martin, but to each their own.

You can see what Godin means in the pics of the Seagull and Martin headstocks above - it seems quite obvious that the Seagull headstock pulls the strings in a much more straight fashion...

And, although I can't say I dislike the Martin headstock, it is a bit simple (not that there's anything wrong with that...), and you could use it as a canoe paddle in a pinch...

Now, if we want to get folks REALLY riled up, let's just mention the Tacoma guitar's headstock, shall we?

LOL, I knew the funky Tacoma headstock would come up. Definitely an acquired taste, but not always horrid..

I actually love the shape of Tacoma guitar headstocks, but for some reason they seem to inspire spluttering, splenetic rage among some folks.

Hi Wade, that headstock looks like it belongs on an electric.

Speaking of headstocks that don't look right on an acoustic those Fenders with the Strat headstocks get me every time.

I think the Seagull headstock is more function over form than form over function. It doesn't look bad but it doesn't look good either, however it works really well.

I don't know if I have seen spluttering, splenetic rage, but it does remind me a little of this guy.

This would be the Seagull headstock.

This would be Martin's

I agree completely. I appreciate the Weissenborn aesthetic. They're very organic. Your Pogreba is awesome! My wife has one of Larry's aluminum single cones.
