When I asked the players they tell me the tuning is E A D G C F, and say they are playing Bajo Sexto.

It is the national instrument of Paraguay. They are played in restaurants, malls, even at the airport in Asuncion. Usually solo in those situations, sounding much like a piano.
The sound boxes on them are made of the same tonewoods as guitars. We're talking a country with a long guitar tradition that not only grows its own tonewoods which are not exported to luthiers in other countries, but..ahem..shares borders with Brazil and Bolivia. Need I say more? I don't know a lot about the plentiful Paraguayan luthiers, but Sanabria harps and guitars are supposed to be handmade by fourth generation builders. |

I think you guys (as many do) are confusing the Guitarron with the Bajo Sexto. The guitarron is the big 6 string bass instrument found in mariachis, sometimes with a harp. I own a guitarron and have owned a bajo sexto. They are both very impressive sounding instruments.
