On a forum you cannot see facial expressions or hear voice inflections. These are extremely important factors in extracting a person's intent when they are speaking.
It's interesting, though, isn't it - after being here for a fair amount of time, I find there are members that seem to have a figurative smile on their face, while others seem grim and joyless, no matter what they're talking about. Tone does come through, despite the lack of facial expression and gesture.

When buying a guitar:
It's easier to ask forgiveness than it is to get permission.

Always remember, we PLAY guitar! The end result should be enjoyable. Otherwise, why do it?

I haven't encountered many members here who seem "grim and joyless" (or whatever negative adjective applies) no matter what they are talking about. But I do notice I like a lot of members a lot better when we're interacting in the guitar sections of the forum than when we interact in Open Mic (and they'd probably say the same about me, lol!).

Try before you buy.

If the guitar is in the case, close at least one buckle.

Don't put the guitar over your head anywhere near a ceiling fan.

If you don't like your XYZ, you can always mail it to me

Yes, I think I overstated that. Let's just say that some seem to have a 'lighter touch' than others.

Try a new guitar in a number of locations, as the room will often influence what you hear. Then, have someone else play it while you listen. Lastly, don't be afraid to come back another day and try it with fresh ears. Ultimately, so much of a guitar's sound is not due to it's wood or construction, but due to the player and fingers/picks.

A strong rhythm can cover up a multitude of poor melody. Learn how to play rhythm!

If you start itching for a new guitar, thinking that it will make your playing sound ike a million bucks. I have a 3 step process:
  1. Shut off the computer
  2. Set some goals related to performing (e.g. 'Record and post a new song every month for a year', or 'start performing at an open mic')
  3. Practice a couple hours per day towards said goal.

I enjoy my expensive guitar, but it didn't make me sound better - it just made my mistakes resonate longer

Red face

If the subject of a post doesn't interest you, move on. Members who are interested are not interested in knowing you aren't interested.

Efforts to avoid stupidly worded posts, as above, are appreciated.
