Default Build thread - flamed koa/Swiss spruce Carrick cutaway

Hi everyone. I started this one a little while back, so the first post is a catch-up on what has gone on so far.

This one has a stunning set of flamed koa paired with a really clean AAA Swiss spruce top. Previous posts have featured guitars going to my Korean dealer, but this one is headed to Cedar Rock Studio Guitar Gallery in the USA, so may be of more interest to the forum audience.

Anyhow, first up a couple of shots of the raw materials, with the koa wetted down in the second to show the curl better.

Now with the back joined and backstrip installed. the backstrip will be fully mitred into the back purfling and binding.

A few shots during and after back bracing.

And finally with sides blocked up in the mould and then back attached.

Hope you find it interesting as the build progresses.

Any post that is titled flamed koa is guaranteed click bait for me.

That's a gorgeous set of koa! I can't wait to see it under finish. I bet the figure is going to pop even more!

Yep, it's a hot one - just needs a deep gloss finish!

Quick update on this one. The top is braced and ready to fit. First, a couple of shots of the rosette. I'm not one for anything too fancy, so its a siimple koa ring. As long as everything is tight and clean, I'm OK with simple!

And now the braced top. I'll trim the cutaway just before gluing.

Beautiful!! That Koa really pops. Can't wait to see it under a nice high gloss finish.

I closed the box on this one a few days ago and cleaned it up ready for binding. The koa really is spectacular on this one, even with just a light wash of solvent (last 2 photos...). It's going to be a looker under finish!

I prefer what you call a "simple" rosette. It seems to be a growing fad to do weird things with the rosette. The kind of rosette you did ties the instrument together and so is a good design. My rosewood/spruce has a maple burl that looks nice even though it is a different color but rosewood would have been better.
