Default A Cure for TAS?? For GAS???

Sell your guitarz quick, before they become obsolete!

I was looking at Line 6's website and found this:

Quote:
Sneak Preview: VARIAX

Introducing the Variax modeling guitar - an entire guitar collection in a single instrument.

Imagine a wall full of the world's finest acoustic and electric guitars ready for you to play in the studio or on stage. Variax is the first guitar to offer the sounds of an entire guitar collection in a single instrument.

Variax combines Line 6's exclusive modeling technology, with a custom-crafted solid-body guitar, to accurately reproduce the sounds of a variety of classic six and twelve string electric and acoustic guitars – plus other fretted favorites, such as a resonator, banjo, and electric sitar.

All of the sounds are accessible with just one knob and the 5-way pickup selector. Variax can change instantly from a classic single-coil solid-body electric to a richly detailed acoustic 12-string at the flick of a switch.

The models in the Variax are based on analysis of the following fine instruments*:

Fender Stratocaster, Fender Telecaster, Fender Telecaster Custom, Gibson ES-175, Epiphone Casino, Gibson ES-335, Gibson Firebird VII, Gibson J-200, Gibson L5, Gibson Les Paul Custom, Gibson Les Paul Special, Gibson Les Paul Standard, Gibson Mastertone Banjo, Gretsch 6120, Gretsch Duo-Jet, Guild F212, Martin 0-18, Martin D-12-28, Martin D-28, National Tricone, Rickenbacker 360, Rickenbacker 360-12, Coral/Dano Electric Sitar, Danelectro 3021, Dobro Number 32.
So, if you own any of the aforementioned guitarz, sell it quick before it becomes a relic of the past! Note the TOTAL absence of Taylors!

Actually, I'll bet it could be a kinda cool tool to ADD to my collection! Moooohahahahahaha!!!!

Well I have a Line Six amp and think it is great for rock tunes.

But I Highly doubt this guitar will catch on.

Parker guitars have made good all around stage guitars for cover bands playing clubs. Since they can do pretty much the same thing as far as reproducing the sound of both electric and acoustic
rather well.

But how many people do you know who actually have 1 ?

I think some working guitar players that do clubs and cover bands may go for them, but most people will see them as just another gimmick. Knowing Line Six They will not be cheap and Line six warranty and service really sucks.

What a Joke!!! It reminds me when really good keyboards came out to duplicate so many sounds. While the are great they will never replce the sound of a real Stienway Grand Piano. Palezzze. JW

Gentlemen, I find your skepticism to be incredulous!

What he say??

Actually I find it to be quite credible. That said, though, have any of you heard Joni Mitchell perform recently? She used to go onstage with a fleet of guitars and now she only uses a Roland (?) thingy that she dials up different tunings on!

REPENT!! THE END IS NEAR!!

Kinda freaky, ain't it?

Guitarists are among the most conservative of musicians.

That said, Line6's methodology of considering the amp and speaker system merely signal processors worked well int he their amp and POD lines. My bets are they are approaching the body wood/neck joint issue in a similar way. Of course, the Variax is only offered in 25.5" scale, which flakes off half the market from the start.

I'll withold judgement.

I'm reminded of the first Peavey* amp invasion ca 1975. Everyone was trading in their Marshalls and Fenders and swearing that Peaveys were the Bees Knees. You could buy a used Marshall plexi for pennies on the dollar. I was on the sideline saying, "These things are incredibly harsh and brittle sounding and I think the emperor has no new clothes." Two years later, everyone was back in the shops trading back and paying dollars on the penny to get their old amps back. Hoo-hoo.

Bob

*Now, mind you, I'm talking the first Peaveys only. Hartley has made many good products.

Unless the next generation of Taylor electronics (or LR Baggs or Fishman) moves ahead about 8 steps, onstage I do think we're heading toward a point where folks will prefer dialing up a variety of sampled tones to the present onboard electronic 'acoustic' sound coming out of today's PAs.

That being said, in almost every other application, ain't nothing like the real thing, baby.

Wasn't the term, "Variax" first coined by Godin? No, wait - That was Multiac... Sorry..

Either way, I don't believe Line 6 can make simulate an acoustic for a minute. I've played with their gear, and although they do a great job on distorted tones, there's an abundance of digital artifacts in their clean modes for electrics. Just didn't sound natural at all.

Personally, I think Roland has a better solution with the VG-88 system and their COSM modeling and their synth patches. The added bonus is you can use it on any steel string guitar you choose - Electric or acoustic.
