Interesting. Yours sounds like it looks a lot different than mine. When I did this original old OP I was so new to AFG that I could only post pics via links...but I can post them direct now.

Here's what mine looks like...

As you can see in my sig I have a Mountain 'D45' and it's a very decent guitar. Mine was a car boot special and cost me £27.50! It was in a pretty battered state and invested £10 in a new bridge but it stands up well against much more expensive competition (including a brand new Martin D45 that I played side by side with it three or four years ago. I'm sure the Martin is a much better guitar now it will have been played a bit but at the time.....). It has laminated rosewood back and sides (there was a badly placed jack socket which had been punched through the side so I can see the laminates) and a solid spruce top. It's nominally my 'busking guitar' but really I keep it as a spare and for the different sound and playing experience compared to my others.

Default Just wondering...

The OP states:
"BTW now that I'm playing again my wife was kind enough to buy me a real Martin D-28 as a retirement gift. Nice to be starting again with this beauty in my lap..."

Occurs to me, are you perhaps referring to your wife here?

That appears to be a solid top on that bad boy! I downloaded the sound hole picture and zoomed in tight and the grain goes strait across! clear as a bell!

Actually, the D-28 has been sold...but my lovely wife remains. And she's welcome in my lap any time.

She has proven her sainthood again and again as she has patiently watched me buy five guitars and sell two over the last 1 1/2 years as I've learned what guitar tones and sizes work for me. See my sig for the latest lineup...

Yep. Shortly after I pulled it out of the closet, I took it to a good luthier for a set up. He said it was in perfect shape and confirmed it has a solid Sitka Spruce top (nicely aged) and laminate rosewood b/s.

Mountain's are amazing. Get one if you ever see it, what have you got to lose - they generally sell for less than a new laminate. And, if you follow Yairi's philosophy regarding laminate bodies or Yamaha red label? - I just got myself a 1970's solid spruce top/Brazilian rosewood (laminate ..stable?) for less than £200. And I do think it is a keeper. It's not perhaps the £5k Martin that it pretends to be, but as my ears get worse and my kids get more expensive, I can live with my Mountain - and the rest...

I have a C.F. Mountain& F-100, which is roughly a OOO-18. Looks to have a solid top, which I thought at first was laminate. I have not seen any other OOO C.F. Mountain& guitars around. I think they were the same company as Mountain, my label looks a lot like yours except that some idjit got red paint or something on it. I did a thread on here on the repair of it about 18 months ago. With intonation work and light strings, it’s really very playable.i had a soundhole pickup in it and left it at the Church music room. It’s now my porch guitar, sounds better than it has a right to. I’m on the lookout for a decent case for it.

Default Mountain

I have a couple of these - and they are great finds! Especially considering that I picked them up for less than £200 each.
I'm never going to buy an equivalent Martin, but instead of comparing them to Martin - just think about them in the context of what you get for such a good price!
Both of mine sound great straight off - added some bone and PlateMate, worked on the action - I have two great looking and great sounding guitars.
Of course, as with any guitar, it's worth playing first - but I got mine straight off ebay and I do not regret it at all. One has Brazilian rosewood and maple back (laminate... of course).. the other has a wonderful bearclaw top!
They both sound and play much better than the cost suggests they should.
Everyone I have heard from who has one, praises them.
If you see one get it before they start raising the vintage prices of Morris and ...dare I say it Yairi!
