Need tuning machine advice for slotted headstock
Im building my first steel string with a slotted headstock.. I ordered Gotoh 35AR510s tuners but now realizing I probably should have gone with slightly different ones..
What I have coming has a 10mm aluminum string post, same size as the plastic ones but this one is aluminum.. there is also a much smaller steel string post option that is 6mm.. Would I be making a mistake using the larger 10mm string post for a steel string guitar?? |

Yes, that is a mistake.

Mistake? Hmmmm. . .
If those 10mm shaft tuners have a 12:1 ratio, you'd be dropping that to about 7.5:1 If you don't have the holes drilled, think about getting the smaller shaft ones.

Here are the details for a recent slot head steel string guitar build:
https://www.acousticguitarforum.com/...d.php?t=579732 I've used dozens of sets of Grover Sta-tite Deluxe tuners for slot head steel string guitars and banjos. I usually pull the buttons and retrofit black ABS or ebony buttons, but that's simply to dress them up a bit and reduce weight. They are the only tuners I'd personally use, as they are an excellent well-made product at a reasonable price. |
