This Old Guitar by John Denver (cover)

I think this is a song many guitar players can identify with, particularly if they have an old guitar that has been through decades of life with them. For me, that guitar is my old Martin D-35, now 51 years old.

The first two verses of this song are spot in for me, in my life, as they were for John Denver. The third verse -- well, I played the guitar and sang for about 7 years for money starting back in 1987 with my wife and family -- but I really made my living as an engineer even though we put some money in the bank from making music.

Thanks so much for your response! I believe I do know the story of this song, from this video...

And for me, too, this has kind of been a go-to John Denver song. When I sat down to record this yesterday, it was morning, I was not warmed up, so I put the capo on the 2nd fret to purposely sing this song higher than needed. So then I took the capo off, turned on the recorder and the cameras and recorded this song on the first take.

I thought, you know, you can do better than this. But I seemed pretty relaxed and I thought, no, this is okay like it is. It's real. Just like watching John Denver in the above video. He was very real, authentic, just who he was.

And it's true, I don't hear much John Denver anymore, either. But he sure made an impact back in the 1970s. I thought it was worthwhile digging up a few of his songs.

"This Old Guitar" is simple, but it tells an almost universal story, at least for guitar players. I thought it was worth taking a shot at.

Another great job, Glenn, and another song I'll have to to put on my to-learn list. I still have most of my old guitars, including my first, the mid-60s Aria. I just played it this afternoon, and though it has some intonation issues, I doubt I'll ever let her go. They truly are friends, and have comforted me on many a night when I couldn't sleep.

I do this song as well, and every time I play it, I remember that, in fact, my wife says she “fell for me” while I was playing my guitar. The song I was playing and singing was “This Magic Moment” by Jay and the Americans. That was 36+ years ago.
