Nice tutorial! Fun trivial: the song was recorded at Caribou Ranch Recording Studio, a destination studio in Nederland, CO, owned by James Guercio, producer of Chicago. He and his family lived there and his daughters worked in the dining room. The first client to record there was Joe Walsh and his band Barnstorm, who recorded their eponymous album there before the studio was even finished. While Supertramp was there to record the album this was on, starting in November '76, they encountered this location and came up with the cover art concept. There are differing versions of how it was accomplished but James Guercio says they trucked the studio's grand up to that summit, covered in snow, and shot the pic. Hard to believe.

Caribou was a "destination studio," a combined studio and vacation spot for recording artists. There were several of these that catered to bands who spent their lives on the road and then took little breaks to record albums. Many found urban-based studios too stressful to unwind from the road and be creative in so the idea became popular. The studio was active until March 1985 when a fire in the studio building brought productions to a close. The last artist to record there before the fire was Amy Grant, whose producer asked Guercio to allow her to record there for "next to nothing." Her first Christmas album was the resultant product and on the front cover she is pictured standing in front of the little collection of Caribou buildings. Guercio didn't rebuild after the fire because he had begun to question raising his daughters around the artists who frequented the place.

Since the fire, Dan Fogelberg and Jeff Beck were allowed to bring their laptops in and record themselves in the cabins. The studio contents were recently sold at auction and a good portion of the ranch was given to the local community as a park.

wow, as always, what a great post, far better than the video! Such cool info from someone who was born in 61 and loved all the artists you mentioned connected with this story. Would have never guess Amy G would have been the last one recorded there.

Thanks so much friend, your fan.

Thanks for your kind words! Oh, and by the way, that was the second song I played to test my Taylor 12 string (354ce). The first was the intro to "And You And I" from Yes' Close to the Edge.
