Hi,
So let me jump in with my first post on AGF since I can relate to your question. I'm an adult beginner playing for about a year and taking weekly lessons for about 9 months. From my experience, lessons are a huge help. When I started by myself I practiced almost every day. I got some books from the library and watched some Youtube lessons. but really I had no idea what was important and what wasn't.

Having a teacher works on a few levels. First, he can quickly correct important things that I'm not doing right but also can let me know about things that are not as important or will improve with time and practice. Second, the investment of lessons motivates me to practice regularly because I don't want to waste my money. So I feel I've progressed much more quickly than I would have by myself. Finally, as a beginner it's fun to play along side someone that's not going to judge you because, lets face it - we're beginners!

I can honestly say that learning to play is the most fun I've had in years!
