Mark, I am consistently impressed by your guitars. I really love how the ABW looks against the WRC. But honestly, everything just seems to belong together. So much fun to watch your builds go from wood stack to playable art.

I'll look into what opportunities we have from NZ or Australia maybe we can work something into the marquetry work for the headstock.
Got you covered on Hawaii. It occurs to me that my logo on the inside back of the guitar is Koa.

Antarctica? Hmm, I've read that at one point in history Antarctica was covered in tropical jungle. With the chunks of ice breaking off down there you never know when something is going to show up.

Thanks Mike!

Here are a couple more pictures of the sides coming together with the arm bevel support and kerfing:

Here is a picture of the neck as I start to clean it up. I like the color match with the Bastogne which will really tighten up when they are under finish:

Thanks for viewing!

Really like how you do the cross grain on the center lam of your necks, Mark. It really sets off the woods so beautifully...

Thanks Nemoman!

I like the grain contrast too and the Zebrawood really stands out.
I selected the Zebrawood because the colors in it match up very well with the Bastogne, Limba, spalted Tamarind, and Cedar. I am also doing the cross grain Zebrawood on the rosette and it will be used on the periphery of the top:

Thanks Again!
Mark

Default Going for some closure

I've been working at setting up the fretboard and the headstock inlay. I'm moving along putting the body together. Here are some pictures of the back being glued on:

I'm planning on closing the body up tomorrow when I glue up the top.
Tomorrow morning will be spent fine tuning the top braces and giving Josie her voice!

Thanks for viewing,
Mark

Mark, what have you been dreaming up here?

I have been very curious about the inlays, seeing as how our discussion during the summer was very "open ended" shall we say.

Can't wait to see your latest inspiration.

Thanks Nemoman,

I really like that spalted Tamarind which is obvious by how often I use it.
When I opened for the art tour a couple weeks ago I met a local fella that spins pens. He says he has been working on his own fungus cultures and is spalting his own woods. Apparently there are certain fungi that produce reds and oranges etc. I'll be spending more time with my neighbor!

Here is the back glued on:

This is the box closed by gluing on the top:

And the laminates being glued to the back of the headstock. I went with burled walnut over a line of maple:

Well since you asked, you wanted a "Tree of Life" theme. Since we've been working all natural woods so far I thought I'd stay away from shell and do marquetry. I found a very accommodating figure in my Tamarind stash and have been working it from there:

The black paper trunk will be a dark brown African Blackwood or BRW. The truss rod cover will be a spalted Tamarind? or something. The tuner keys will be the black and white ebony which matches the Tamarind and will do well to frame the whole composition of the headstock. I like how the contrast between the tree and the top headstock laminate is more about the texture and direction of the figure than color.

Better tell me to stop if you don't like it cause I'm going for it tomorrow!

Mark

From my perspective Mark, you nailed it! I love it.

I have to say that I love abalone purfling, but I'm really getting into the all wood embellishments that you are doing here.

I know that you have stated in the past that you get more views when you use a lot of abalone, but my guess is that when this is done and under finish no one will be missing it.

Awesome work!

That tree is beyond words awesome! I am a fan of ab myself but the radial Zebrawood around the rosette (and top) as well as this headstock inlay have me thinking. Next time around for me it will be marquetry everywhere!

Thanks Chedeng88,

Here is the headstock with the tree in place. I have a swipe of naptha on it to show color better:

I did the back of the headstock with walnut burl. Here is a picture with the tuners in place. I'm going to change the tuner buttons to black and white ebony but I wanted to check color again and I'm liking what I see!:

I'm also pushing along on the body. I've got the end graft in and am binding the top:

Thanks for viewing!

Looks fantastic Mark, I couldn't be happier.

You have really pulled things together in an awesome way.

Thanks for taking some simple concepts and ideas and making them into something beautiful.

I'm excited to see the remaining parts come together.
