Like many I took a hiatus from the guitar (almost 3 decades), because of work and all that. After retiring I decided to pick it up again. In the past I'd always been focused on learning to play, without really knowing much of anything about what makes a guitar work, or not. I didn't think about tone woods, nut widths, and couldn't have told you what scale length was.

When I started researching new guitars online, as you said, it's hard to not run into the AGF. So I joined, and have learned a lot. Now I know that tone woods on the back/sides have only a small effect on a guitar's sound, and that they have a big effect. And I know that cutaways don't matter, and that they do matter. And that spruce is spruce, but German spruce is much different than Sitka. That's what I like about the AGF. There are lots of opinions, many to learn from and, more importantly, plenty of enablers

Acoustic guitar? I have seen them around. Came here to get some information on making one. No expert but I can build one without too much hair loss. Still have to learn to play them. Working on that now.

The more I learn. The more I find, the less I know.

Default How much did you know about acoustic guitars when you joined this forum?

Fifty years' worth of hands-on - played all the '60s/70s stuff when it was brand-new, and the prewar/early-postwar instruments when they could still be had at "used-guitar" prices...

Less than I know now... partly due to the good information I get here, but also I have more experience now and have bought better instruments over the years. If you intend to spend more money, you better learn more first.

I knew a lot. More aware of the work of different luthiers since joining the forum though.

I didn't know about all the concern with bridge pins.

I’d played guitar for 20+ years before joining the forum, but the majority of that time I acquired guitars more or less fortuitously and without much knowledge about any one guitar over another, whether acoustic or electric. When I decided to be a bit more deliberate in my search for a quality acoustic - It’ll be a “lifer,” I told myself, the last guitar I’ll ever buy. Hahahaha! - I started reading in earnest about different manufacturers, body sizes, wood combos, etc. Anyone who googles slightly more than a few acoustic guitar questions will see the AGF pop up again and again. That definitely happened for me. When I found myself coming to this forum over and over, I joined. When I joined, I knew quite a bit more than I had maybe a month before, but a lot of it I’d learned from the forum as a nonmember. Since joining, I’ve learned even more. Now I appreciate the acoustic guitar in a way I hadn’t even known I could.

So, how much did all of you know about acoustic guitars when you joined the AGF?
Very similar to my story ... except I had been playing guitar for well over 40 years when I discovered AGF. Never knew brands like Weber, Northwood, and Larrivee existed --- now I own and love all 3. AGF definitely has opened up my guitar world beyond what's at your local Guitar Center. Learning new things all the time! THANKS AGF !

Great thread! Cheers!

How much did you know about acoustic guitars when you joined this forum?

I knew a fair amount about some things -- performing, how to play, how to record and make albums and CDs -- but there is a lot of detail about guitars that I have learned here that I doubt that I would have learned anywhere else.

Also, I learned a great deal about other manufacturers of guitars from this forum and consequently bought some of these models. I have certainly enriched my life, though I have spent a lot more money.

But as we say here on the forum, life is short.

I have also met a bunch of people associated with this forum who live in the Seattle area through AGF gatherings and that has been very cool.
