Default Cold Jordan (Bluegrass Gospel)

Here's an old tune originally recorded by Ralph Stanley and written by Fred Rich called "Jordan," or "Cold Jordan." I first heard The Grateful Dead do it it, then various bluegrass groups. It's a simple thing, but I always liked it, and it's the kind of music I grew up on in West Virginia, so it was pretty natural learning it:

I didn't grow up anywhere near West Virginia (although I spent a summer there in 1975 building a cabin on land my brother owned), but as soon as you got to the chorus I remembered that song. Not sure I knew the Dead ever did it, but I was definitely familiar with it from somewhere, probably some bluegrass group. Seems like a song that a lot of folks probably did. Enjoyed your version a lot Tim. Keep 'em coming - you know a lot of really cool old songs.

Liked it Tim. Early and rare traditional dead cover.

Ray, if you listened to any of the Dead's acoustic sets from 1970, you probably heard Cold Jordan there. It's always been done by tons of bluegrass acts. I thought it was cool that the Dead did a tune that I heard at bluegrass shows and pickin' parties.

Anyway, I appreciate the interest and support, as ever, my friend. Thank you.

Thank you, Joe. It's really common in bluegrass circles, and that's where I am most familiar with it. I do love the Dead's version, too, though.

Nice job! Haven't heard that one in a long time - I don't think I knew the name, actually.
