I wonder if Thomann might have something that would work for you. The shipping charges would be a little less for you and the delivery should be a lot less.
I’m never buying a guitar online again after the G45, too much hassle returning. I am someone who needs to try the exact model before I buy.

It's not a bolt-on neck. It's a Simple Dovetail. It's a machine carved straight dovetail instead of a hand carved compound dovetail.

Good luck with it. Let us know what you think.

Sure I read somewhere on here ‘simple dovetail’ was a rather cheeky term for bolt on so that’s where I got that from. Not that I care that much so long as it sounds and plays good!

I have played a used Furch RS-31SR at the "New Acoustic Gallery" (in Germany) a few times that I really really like. It is not exactly a D28, but it has some characteristics of one. I have a D28, otherwise it would have followed me home before now.

Contact Jon at My Favorite Guitars and ask him his current price. He's in the US and ships Martins all over the world. I'm in Canada and bought a D28 from him last year. I saved a ton of money from MSRP. Even with the exchange rate and shipping, it was a killer deal. He's one of our forum sponsors. Customer service from Jon and his wife, Sharon is second to none.

Surely there must be a place where you could compare a D-28 head-to-head with a variety of other quality guitars. If you still think Martins are special after some real side-by-side comparisons, it will motivate your money saving. If you discover that you like something as well or better that costs less, that will save you money now, and head off disappointment down the road.

Just get a D-28. If you buy something else you’ll still want the D-28, just save yourself some time and money and get what it is you really want.

^^^true. But if you can get over the headstock magnetism, take a look at a Larrivee. Best value for a small-shop USA made instrument.

^^^I'll agree with this but the Larrivee D-03R will not sound like the new D-28. A fine guitar in it's own right but certainly no Martin?

If you can swing it get the Martin. I have done the same thing in the past with other brands.

I wanted a Takamine GJ72CE in natural finish to match my GJ72CE-12 String. They didn't have one in a natural finish. They said they could order one but I wanted to buy now. So I bought a GD93. Really happy with the GD93 but I still want that GJ72CE.

Save enough to get the financing to an comfortable level and get your D-28.

United States Martin dealers can no longer ship out of the country.

Glad to hear it. I played a used one at GC and I swear it was the best sounding dread there that day. They just wanted too much for it, imo.

What are some good alternatives for under half the cost? I am thinking maybe Eastman E8D might have a similar sound? Higher end Takamines maybe?
I don't know how easy they would be to find in the UK, whats left of it now, or Europe in general...but...a late 60's to early 70's Yamaha FG-180 would get you extremely close to vintage Martin D-28 tone, and give you a super durable instrument as well. The old Swedish Levin dreadnaughts of that same era, which used to be more common in Europe, not sure about now, would also work really really well.
