Do you make your own Food/Beverages?
Anyone make their own food or beverages from scratch? I'm not talking about simple stuff like making spaghetti that you buy in a box but if you make your own pasta from scratch or sauce then yes. Or bake bread, cookies, marinate something etc?
Also, Do you make your own beverages? For example, do you roast your own beans (that was a great thread) or brew your own beer? You know what, let's include things you may grow (veggies/fruits) or raise (chickens). |

My wife has become an expert kombucha brewer. About 50 cents per bottle compared to $3 or more at the store.

I like to make bread from scratch. All shapes and sizes but my Tomato Basil and Garlic loaf always goes down well.
All meals are prepared by me and most of the time it is made from the ground up - although I don't actually catch the fish or wrestle the cow to the ground. I like to know what is going in and avoid the excessive amounts of salt and sugar that finds its' way into many processed meals. |

A couple of years ago I started making banana bread using whole wheat flower and apple sauce instead of butter. I tweaked the recipe each time and it turned out well (except for the time it was too wet even when I baked it twice as long). I should pick that up again because it was very tasty.

We don’t eat out much nor buy pre-made/frozen foods, so we (mostly my wife unless I’m on the grill) make almost everything from scratch. Occasionally, I make homemade fruit pies from scratch, including the pastry...apple, blueberry, strawberry-rhubarb. I made a three layer black forest cake with cherries not long ago for our daughter-in law’s birthday. We’ve made banana-strawberry bread...apples/sauce seems good to try. Banana bread is good with another fruit to make it real moist. As for beverages, not really.

I cook every day, often completely from scratch.
I haven't branched off into beverages. I should...it sounds fun. |

Being on a "fixed" low income budget, I realized long ago that anything I can make at home, myself, will be a fraction of the cost of buying it prepared or "eating out"...
Not to mention that when I make it, I KNOW what's in it! No mysteries about how much salt or any funky ingredients. My current residence is a tiny place with limited kitchen facilities... we're talking a 3/4 sized stove with only 2 of 4 burners functional... possibly 4 sq. feet of counter space. With this arrangement, I'm hard-pressed to do anything too fancy! But I'll make soups from scratch, make my own refried bean mixture for tacos and nachos... make my own salsa's and salad dressings. I will use certain packaged foods (like canned organic black beans). Don't have the room to be making my own breads or desserts (which I don't eat much of anymore). My little home does not have great ventilation, so I generally avoid cooking much meat, as the whole place stinks up and lingers for a LONG time!

I cold brew my own coffee every week, Sous Vide some chicken or steak from time to time, and make my own cheesecake from scratch every so often.

My wife was a professional baker at one point so my kids grew up on her fresh breads and desserts. She basically made all of our meals from scratch for years. Proud of her!

We cook and bake from scratch a lot and grow our own veggies during growing season. We almost never eat prepared foods.

Do a lot of cooking here and more and more the last couple of years. No baking tho. Sugar and calories here come primarily from beer and wine rather than desert. Grilling and smoking are among the mainstays. Recipes and cooking Ed now primarily from the internet rather than books. Very excited to try cooking classes in Oaxaca later this month. Restaurant work decades ago right after college days helped me and encouraged me in the kitchen. Memphis in May classes with friends got me going too.

I recently made some no bake oatmeal/raisin/peanut butter bars from scratch.

Quite a bit of it . I eat very little prepared food . An occasional frozen pizza ....
I have even delved into making my own Red Raspberry Melomel . The berries grow in the front yard . Water comes from a spring in Colebrook , yeast from Rothsville and honey from Tennessee . Currently have a considerable quantity in my basement of dry and semi-sweet in jars and about 6 gallons of sweet under an airlock waiting to be racked into bottles . Been under an airlock for possibly 6 months now . Guess I should complete the process . Gave a half gallon to be distilled and got it back , so I gave another whole gallon . Hope to have that back in less than the 2 years that the first took to get done . The irony is that I don't drink alcohol and still haven't really figured out my fascination yet . The only complaint that I have ever received was " Is this all you have ? " If any of you decide to stop in , I will gladly share my Melomel with you . |
