Default Switching out an 8 ohm speaker for a 4 ohm

I got a little Peavy portable amp at an auction, and it works OK, but I also have a 4 ohm bass speaker of the same physical size. Since I'm going to be using the amp mostly with an acoustic bass, I was wondering if I could get away with switching out one speaker for another one (the existing speaker is 8 ohm).

Back when I was a sprout in the tube days, that would be too much of a mismatch in impedance, but I've been told that it's not so critical anymore what with solid state circuitry. Is this true?
