Default Sad day at the fires again. 3 American firefighters killed

The bushfires here took another tragic turn today. 3 US firefighters lost their lives earlier when their C130 Hercules water bomber crashed while tackling blazes in the areas between Numeralla & Adaminaby only 60-70 km south of where I sit now. Condolences to all their loved ones. Apparently they have been embedded with the NSW Rural Fire Service for many months now. Their loss will be felt acutely by all.

After a couple of benign days the wind picked up again yesterday afternoon, the day started hot here, the wind gusts became severe, the dust storm that has swept through three states finally enveloped this city, 2 blazes got out of control on the city's edge & the neighbouring town of Queanbeyan before a late change brought a thunderstorm still going outside here (more noise than rain though). The fires on the South coast also flared up again with more houses lost. We're only halfway through summer.

RIP. Airtanker crews have a particularly hazardous job, flying large, heavy aircraft close to terrain. Much respect.

Condolences to the families affected by this tragedy.

One of the biggest hazards of air tanker flying is getting into the area above the fire and having engine failure due to oxygen starvation.

This is a particularly dangerous risk when fighting fires moving up a mountainside where you dump your water and need max power to pull up to clear the mountain.

It's been 20 days now since my wife and I were evacuated for 2 nights.

The highway to Melbourne is still closed.
The highway to Sydney was re-opened but closed again yesterday.
The Kings Highway to Canberra was re-opened but closed again yesterday.
The road from Cooma to Tumut was closed again yesterday, this was the area where the US plane was lost.

It's still burning all around us.

Yes it is. It must be terrifying for those who fight forest fires that get caught surrounded by it with no escape.

To my AGF mates in Canberra, NSW and elsewhere where the fires are still burning, I feel for you and for all those who risk their lives and have lost their lives. As a transplanted Aussie from the US, I am touched by the American firefighters who came here to help and their selflessness, and saddened by the loss of life.

Brisbane and the southern end of the Sunshine Coast are safe for now, especially after a couple weeks of steady storms and showers. However we can help from this distance, we will. If there’s anything you need, let me know by private message.

Right now, I can (and do) pray for all to be safe and free from danger and harm, and for real leadership and commitment from our governments at all levels.

Flags at half-mast at many sites in Australia today to honor these heroes.

This is Sydney Harbour Bridge today.

Crews got to the crash site & have recovered the bodies of the 3 aerial firefighters as well as the black box/voice recorders etc. RIP.

Looking at hotspots to where the active firefront is correlates to my own GPS logs of where we have done numerous rides over the years in the colder months.

This is a view looking south in 2014 from a hilltop that is currently ablaze near an old abandoned gold mine we would often pull up for a rest. Probably close to where the tanker unloaded 15 ton of fire retardant before it crashed.

Yes, here is an example, the first plane is the guide plane (specifically for that reason) . My house sits on top of the ridge just below the right wing as it makes it turn.
