I must admit I was very apprehensive concerning an all mahogany guitar thinking that it just couldn't be as responsive as spruce, boy was I DEAD WRONG! Your vivid description is identical to my new honeymoon!
Many thanks and congratulations on your killer guitar! As for the performance, it isn't mine. That's Lindsay Straw at The Music Emporium. It's a great representation of my guitar.

My 1944 0-17 was advertised at Elderly MI online years back and I pressed the buy button! And it arrived by Fedex! A bit easy, you think?

BluesKing777.
Like falling off a log.

Of course, I had my faithful manservant, Thomas, take care of it for me. We just didn't know it at the time.

Thanks to you all for the good vibes! I've been bubbling over with excitement since November, when I bought the guitar from Thomas. After all this time waiting to capture it in words, it feels good to share the experience with the AGF community at long last.

Since November, I've also spent a lot of time reflecting on what things were like when this guitar was crafted. The business climate had never been worse, and 1933 would turn out to be the worst year for Martin guitar sales during the Depression. They had to lay a lot of people off, probably keeping only the most experienced craftspeople on the payroll, some of whom may have had a hand in making even this lowly 0-17. They had a large stockpile of quality timber and slack demand; when every sale mattered, and every guitar had to be the best it could be, even a modest all-hog box like mine was probably built with the best timber the factory had at hand.

The all-contour shading was Martin's short-lived attempt to compete with other manufacturers' burst finishes in 1932-1933. I'm not sure how many 0-17s got the shade treatment, but they are rare birds. Mine is very pretty, not too dark in the middle.

Being a '33, it has a 14-fret neck with an ebony rod in the neck. It didn't take long for me to adjust to the bar frets, and the role they play in stabilizing the neck is part of what makes this guitar so special. It feels so solid, yet weighs so little. The intonation is as close as a fretted instrument's can get to perfect. There's not a single spot on the neck that's weak. I can play anything I want and it always sounds true. Phenomenal, even more so for an instrument that is 88 years old!

Oh, and did I mention how EASY it is to play?

Default '32 1-17

Here's my '32 1-17, its in its original G&S hardshell case. Thinking about selling it, neck is too wide for my wifes hands, bought her a Kalamazoo 3/4 Sport.

My dear friend,

Your ability to tell guitar stories is unparalleled...

I almost regret that you've now landed on a solid stable of 3 complementary birds, because I'll miss the way you stage the evolution of your guitar taste. As the one who helped bringing this guitar across the pond, I am pleased for that sweet little Martin to remain "in the family", so I can still enjoy it during our future encounters (but I must admit, reading your eloquent NGD brought a hitch to my heart).

That guitar beautifully showcases what 0-17s are able to do. Uncanny resonance, perfectly balance across all registers, a woody tone to die for... Only my struggle to change tunings (which I do several times in one session) pushed me to take part with this guitar.

I think Marc has a recording of this guitar on one of his recent tunes. Despite being a talented composer he does not share much, which I hope will change in the future (yep Marc I am putting pressure on you, shamelessly so).

Cheers,

Thank you so much, Thomas, for your very kind words! I can't wait for our next get-together once you return from your latest overseas mission. Sharing this passion for guitars and music with you always makes me feel so much more alive!

You're right about the three guitars I've acquired since we've met. Each one has its own thing going, and all three are deeply rewarding to play. I am very fortunate to have found these three birds in such short order, especially given how rare they are in the wild on this side of the pond.

Scroll back three years, and this outcome would have seemed like science fiction. I was a player with far less exposure chasing a different kind of dream, modern, innovative, stylish. What I've learned about what really matters to me since then comes from spending the occasional long afternoon with people like Thomas and Alain (brownsteins), playing, listening, analyzing and, above all, enjoying a small but enviable collection of high-caliber guitars.

Our sessions are what make me feel more fulfilled with my current lineup than ever before. This does not mean that my guitars are better than those of my friends, or worse, for that matter. They just work for me so well that I feel no guitar envy. Since I no longer wish to put myself through the psychological discomfort associated with having too many guitars, I actually enjoy my friends' guitars more freely precisely because they are not mine: no guilt about "not playing that one enough", no fear about "could this be the one that got away?", no anxiety about investment value, resale value, none of that. Best party on earth, folks.

Does this mean I'll never post another NGD thread again???

Le mystčre demeure...

One thing is certain. I really should post another song soon. Ugh.
