Default martin d18 question:

Forgive my ignorant question but,
Do Martin d18s only come with the 1 3/4 nut width?
I plan to buy one as a gift for my brother, but I know
He doesn't like the wider neck
Thanks for your replys
Dave

I think that most built prior to 2013 came in a 1 11/16" nut. Find one used in excellent condition?

Has he played one?
I have pretty small hands and it’s not a big deal.

Prior to 2012, the D-18 had a 1-11/16” nut-width, rosewood fingerboard and bridge, a Low-Profile neck, and straight bracing in ‘standard’ position. It was re-designed in 2012, and given, amongst other changes, a 1-3/4” nut-width, ebony fingerboard and bridge, a Modified Low Oval neck profile with the Performing Artist taper, and forward-shifted, scalloped bracing which radically changed the tone.

The pre- and post-2012 D-18s are very different beasts in terms of sound and feel - I’d recommend trying examples of both, if possible, before buying.

My own D-18 is one of the re-designed ones, built in 2012, it’s an absolute cannon, and with the MLO neck I barely notice the wider nut compared to my HD-28V’s 1-11/16” Mod-V. Can’t recommend the updated D-18 too highly. Great guitars.

The usual disclaimers apply......IMHO, YMMV etc.

I have one of the re designed ones with the wider neck. To me it was an aquired taste. It took me a while to get used to it , but the guitar is such a great guitar it was worth the effort.

Outside of getting an older (pre 2012) one with the narrower nut , a custom order would probably be your next option. Keep in mind the older D18s are straight braced with rosewood fretboards and bridges. Totally different . You might want to look at used D18GEs, but they arent cheap these days.
